Junior (2001): The Panthers' lone All-Big East selection, Joe Engel was a dominant force in his first season with Pittsburgh...became the first Panther pitcher to be named all-conference...was a catalyst on the mound for the Panthers, starting 10 games and registering six complete games...led the team in wins (5), innings pitched (70.1) and strikeouts (69), and was second in ERA with an impressive 1.92 mark...his ERA never eclipsed 2.53 on the season...recorded at least eight strikeouts in five of the 10 games he pitched...held opposition to a dismal .212 batting average...tallied one of the team's two shutouts on the season, an 8-0 blanking of Rutgers...pitched a nine-inning complete gem, striking out eight Scarlet Knights and giving up just seven hits (six singles and one double)...mowed down a career-high 11 batters in a 10-8 victory over Georgetown...tossed another nine-inning performance in his last outing of the season, a 4-1 victory over Virginia Tech...struck out six batters and walked three.
