Dan Lipari comes to Pittsburgh after spending the last two seasons at Youngstown State University.Last season, he served as YSU's top assistant and recruiting coordinator. In his two years with the Penguins, he guided three pitchers to the professional ranks, including Phil Klein in 2011. Klein was named to the 2nd team All Horizon League in 2011 and was selected in the 30th round of the MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers.

"I was very pleased to have the opportunity to add Dan Lipari to our staff," said head coach Joe Jordano. "His experience and talent will benefit our program tremendously. Coach Lipari will assist in many aspects of the program and we are already feeling his impact on the program."

In his first season at Youngstown State in 2009-2010, Lipari worked primarily with the pitching staff and catchers as a volunteer assistant. He helped implement the pitching program that saw two Penguins hurlers sign professional contracts. Eric Marzec was selected in the 30th round of the MLB Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, and Aaron Swenson signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Orioles.

Marzec earned two championship rings in the minors, pitching for the Helena Brewers and the Brewers affiliate in the Arizona League. He was honored by minorleaguebaseball.com as the top playoff pitcher in the Pioneer League for his performance with Helena. Swenson was promoted to the Class A South Atlantic League midway through the year. He earned second-team All-Horizon League honors, while Marzec was recognized as a second-team utility player for the third straight season.

Lipari also assisted with coaching the outfielders, administrating the Youngstown State Baseball School, managing the fundraising efforts of the YSU Diamond Club and performing daily operations in the baseball office.

In the summer of 2010, Lipari was the pitching coach for the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers of the Northwoods Summer Collegiate League. The Lunkers staff ranked sixth out of 16 teams in the league with a team ERA of 3.85.

Lipari was a three-year letterwinner at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, from 2006-08. As a senior, he appeared in 22 games, which ranked second on the team, and helped lead Morningside to the GPAC Tournament Championship and a #1 seed in the North Dakota Regional Tournament. His 22 outings in 2008 also ranks as the third most in school history for a single season.

After his playing days, Lipari was named the pitching coach for theOmaha Creighton Prep Junior Varsity Legion Team in the summer of 2009. Along with becoming a college coach, he also assisted in youth baseball development in Sioux City, Iowa.

Lipari earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Morningside in 2008.
