HOMESTEAD, Fla.-The University of Pittsburgh baseball team notched its ninth victory of the season as it defeated Adelphi, 3-2, Tuesday night at the Homestead Challenge. The Panthers have yet to lose a game this season, running its overall record to 9-0-1.
Pittsburgh jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Brant Colamarino led off with a solo home run to right field. After Adelphi knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth frame, the Panthers regained the advantage in the bottom half of the inning as Brad Rea singled home Scott Folmar. Rea led Pittsburgh with two hits and one RBI.
The Panthers upped their lead to 3-1 in the seventh inning as Michael Bell roped an RBI-triple, scoring Mike Zambriczki, who earlier drew a free pass.
Adelphi added cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth inning but could not get any closer.
Joe Engel picked up his team-leading third win of the season, working three innings and striking out two batters. Don Rhoten came on to pitch the final four innings, mowing down three batters and earning his first career save.
Pittsburgh is back in action on Wednesday as it plays Fairfield at 11:15 a.m. in Homestead.
