The Pitt baseball team (7-3) wrapped up the Caravelle Resorts Invitational Sunday morning with an 11-7 loss to Toledo.
In the first inning, Toledo took the early 1-0 lead. The Panthers responded with a Kevan Smith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) RBI single to third base, driving home John Schultz (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson West Lawn), who had reached on a double, tying the game at 1-1 after one.
Toledo added two runs in the top of the second and Pitt took its first lead of the day with a three-run output in the bottom of the inning. Danny Lopez (Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) homered to left field to bring home Pitt's three runs, giving the Panthers the 4-3 lead.
The third, fourth and fifth innings were scoreless for both teams as Pitt left two on base throughout those three innings. A Toledo solo home run and a Lopez groundout RBI gave each team one run in the sixth, bringing the score to 5-4.
Each team added a run in the seventh for the 6-5 Pitt lead. Toledo broke open the game in the top of the eighth, however, with four runs on two hits. One of those hits was a grand slam, giving the Rockets the 9-6 lead.
Toledo added two more runs in the top of the ninth for the 11-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. Pitt's first two batters reached base on fielding errors by Toledo. A Smith RBI groundout, brought home Schultz to bring the score to 11-7, but the Panthers were unable to make up any more ground.
Pitt will be back in action Wednesday, March 10 at 2 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. for a meeting at Florida Atlantic. The Panthers will wrap up its road trip March 12-14 with a three-game series against Fordham in Florida.
