PITT BASEBALL PULLS OUT 14-INNING WIN AT AKRON, 4-2
April 10, 2007 AKRON, Ohio - The Pitt baseball team (14-14, 7-4 Big East) tallied two runs on three hits in the top of the 14th inning to capture a 4-2 win at Akron (14-9) Tuesday night. Rob Brant (JR/Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield) singled to right field in the 14th inning to drive in Danny Lopez (FR/Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) for the winning run with the game at 3-2. Pitt's final run of the night was scored on a Peter Parise (SR/Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) fielder's choice, driving in Jordan Herr (RS-FR/Lancaster, Pa./Delaware) from third. Kyle Landis (RS-SO/Hazelton, Pa./Hazelton) continued his outstanding pitching on the season closing out the game in the 14th inning giving up no runs on one hit for the save; his third of the season. Bobby Bell (SR/Olean, N.Y./Erie Community College) picked up his first win of the season entering in the 12th inning. Bell gave up no runs on three hits while striking out one. Pitt struck early starting with a Parise double to right center in the top of the first inning. Morgan Kielty (SO/Burlington, Ont./Burlington Central) then doubled to right, bringing Parise home for the 1-0 Pitt lead. In the third, the Panthers added to their lead as Herr led of the inning with a triple to right center. Sean Conley (JR/Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) grounded out to second base, but it was enough to drive in Conley for the score and the 2-0 lead. The Zips were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Charlie Lenhard scored on a Pitt throwing error. Pitt starter Ryan Dunford (SO/Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) finished the game pitching 6.0 innings while giving up one run - none earned -- on five hits while striking out four.
Akron concluded their scoring in the seventh on a Brett Savage single to left field scoring John Turk from third, tying the game at 2-2. Pitt was held scoreless for 10 consecutive innings before adding two in the top of the 14th for the victory and the 4-2 win. Herr finished the game 3 of 5 with two runs scored on the day. Brant, one of Pitt's starting pitchers went to left field in the 11th inning and hit 1 for 1 while driving in the winning run. Pitt returns to action Wednesday against cross-town rival Duquesne for a 7 p.m. matchup at Falconi Field in Washington, Pa. Admission and parking is free to those in attendance.
