PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (26-9) downed Coppin State (10-23), 10-4, in game one of a double header this afternoon at Cost Field.
Jeff Kelly (SR/Pottstown, Pa.) (1-0) earned the win with a complete seven inning outing allowing two earned and striking out three. Chris Vazquez (1-1) took the loss for Coppin State.
The Panthers got on the board first scoring a pair in the bottom of the first. Stephen Vranka (JR/Monroeville, Pa.) led off the inning by drawing a walk and moved into scoring position with a steal. Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) moved Vranka up 90 feet with a single through the left side. With runners on the corners, Pitt got its first run on a perfectly executed double steal. The Panthers scored their second on a fielder choice hit by Steven Shelinsky Jr. (JR/Yardley, Pa.).
Pitt added seven runs to its lead in the second. After an early out Dylan Wolsonovich (FR/Ford City, Pa.) drew a walk and Evan Oswald (SR/Butler, Pa.) was hit by a pitch. Following a double steal, Vranka singled to left scoring Wolsonovich. Roche then ripped a two RBI single to center. Boo Vazquez (SO/Youngstown, Ohio) singled to right to load bases. Shelinsky then came to the plate and blasted a grand slam off of the scoreboard in left to make the score 9-0.
After CSU scored four in the top of the third, a Sam Parente (SR/Pittston, Pa.) home run in the bottom of the fifth made the score 10-4.
The two teams will return to action at 3:30 p.m. for a second seven inning contest.
