PITTSBURGH – Dylan Wolsonovich (FR/Ford City, Pa.) hit a walk-off, bases-loaded RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the University of Pittsburgh baseball team (38-11, 16-3 Big East) defeated Villanova (11-37, 2-17 Big East), 4-3, this afternoon in the first game of a double header at Charles L. Cost Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
Joseph Harvey (SO/Audobon, Pa.) (3-1) earned the win in relief while Kevin MacLachlan (1-3) took the loss.
The contest was a pitchers’ duel for the first five innings as neither starter allowed a run. A pair of stellar defensive plays by Pitt also highlighted the early innings. In the top of the third, Boo Vazquez (SO/Youngstown, Ohio) robbed Adam Goss of a hit with a diving catch in left field. Not to be outdone, Evan Oswald (SR/Butler, Pa.) saved a run in the top of the fifth when he made a beautiful backhand snag deep in the hole at short and made the throw across his body to get the final out of the inning.
The Panthers got on the board first when they scored three in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wolsonovich started the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Following an out, Elvin Soto (SO/New York, N.Y.) roped a double into right field to put runners at second and third with one out. Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) stepped to the plate and sent a ball to center field for a sacrifice fly to score the game’s first run. Vazquez came to the dish with two-outs and delivered a clutch RBI-single. After Sam Parente (SR/Pittston, Pa.) landed a base hit into left to put runners on the corners, Steven Shelinsky Jr. (JR/Yardley, Pa.) hit a perfectly placed ball through the left side to bring home Vazquez and make the score 3-0 in favor of the Panthers.
Ethan Mildren (JR/Hopwood, Pa.) came out of the game after seven strong innings of work where he allowed no runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Wildcats put runners at the corners with no outs in the top of the eighth against Jon Danielczyk (JR/Erie, Pa.) before Vazquez made another diving catch in left and alertly hit the cutoff man, Wolsonovich, who fired the ball to first for a double play. Villanova was able to send a run to the plate on the play but were unable to get anything else in the inning off of Andrew Belfiglio (FR/Newtown Square, Pa.) and Harvey.
Villanova tied the score with a pair in the top of the ninth before Pitt’s dramatics in the bottom of the inning. Shelinsky led off the inning by working a walk. John Peluso (SR/Bethlehem, Pa.) followed with a single into right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. After the Wildcats elected to intentionally walk Oswald, Wolsonovich came up and ripped a 2-1 pitch off the glove of a diving VU shortstop for the game-winning RBI.
The Panthers and Wildcats will return to action for the second game of a double header shortly.
