May 17, 2013

Final Stats

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (40-14, 18-5 Big East) fell to No. 10 Louisville (45-10, 19-4 Big East), 12-4 this evening at Patterson Stadium.

"We got beat today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "I don't think it was anything that we didn't do but it was about what Louisville did. They swung the bats very well, Thompson threw a very solid game and that was the difference."

Jeff Thompson (10-1) earned the win while Matt Wotherspoon (JR/Mountain Top, Pa.) (9-2) took the loss.

The Panthers struck first in the top of the first when Stephen Vranka (JR/Monroeville, Pa.) blasted an 0-1 fastball over the wall in leftfield for a leadoff bomb to give Pitt an early 1-0 lead.

Louisville answered with six in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to take the 8-1 advantage.

Pitt chipped away at the lead with two in the top of the fifth. Steven Shelinsky Jr. (JR/Yardley, Pa.) led off the inning with a single into left field. With one out, Bennette Hill (FR/Olive Branch, Miss.) drew a walk and Evan Oswald (SR/Butler, Pa.) singled through the right side to load the bases. Dylan Wolsonovich (FR/Ford City, Pa.) drew a walk to bring home the first run of the inning. Vranka then reached on a fielder's choice for his second RBI which cut the UL lead to 8-3.

The Cardinals answered with a pair of their own in the home half of the fifth to regain a seven run cushion. In the process UL chased Wotherspoon from the game and the Panthers went to Jon Danielczyk (JR/Erie, Pa.) out of the pen. Danielczyk proceeded to throw 1.1 innings of scoreless ball before the Cardinals were able to score two off Pitt relievers in the bottom of the seventh.

The Panthers scored a run on a Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) single but left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth.

Luke Curtis (SO/Philipsburg, Pa.), who came in in relief of Pete Macke (FR/Omaha, Neb.) in the seventh, went 1.1 of scoreless ball to get Pitt through eight.

The Panthers were unable to add anything in the ninth as UL was able to clinch the series victory.

"We just have to put that behind us and focus on coming back tomorrow and trying to play a good baseball game," Jordano said. "It's not about Championships, it's not about number of wins, it's about playing a good baseball game and our objective tomorrow is to play our game. We'll be ready."

Pitt and Louisville will wrap up the series tomorrow at noon with a contest that will air live on ESPNU and be streamed live via the WatchESPN ap. Rhys Aldenhoven (JR/Victoria, Australia) (8-0) gets the ball for the Panthers, while Dace Kime (5-1) will start for UL.
