Pitt at Armed Services Classic complete notes

PITTSBURGH -

Pitt baseball will travel to Memphis for the Armed Services Classic in Millington, Tenn., Feb. 26-28. The Panthers will face Bradley Friday at 11 a.m., Memphis Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Toledo Sunday at 11 a.m. Below are game notes for the weekend series.

Pitt's Projected Starting Rotation:
2/26 — Corey Baker: 1-0, 6.43 ERA
2/27 — Matt Iannazzo: 1-0, 3.38 ERA
2/28 — Nate Hood: 0-0, 3.00 ERA

Scouting Pitt
Pitt opened the season with a 2-1 series win at Wofford including an 18-6 debut on Friday, a 7-3 win on Saturday and a tough 9-8 extra innings loss on Sunday. Junior third baseman Joe Leonard finished the opening weekend hitting .533 with four doubles and a grand slam.

Scouting Bradley
Bradley opens the season Friday against the Panthers. In 2009, the Braves finished the season 17-31 and 4-17 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Bradley leads the all-time series between the two schools with a 9-8 win last season in 10 innings. The game, played on Feb. 20, 2009, marked the season-opener for the Panthers.

Scouting Memphis
Memphis is 1-2 heading into the weekend. The Tigers traveled to UT-Martin Tuesday night, resulting in a 5-4 loss. Memphis finished the 2009 season 21-32 and 7-16 in the C-USA.

Pitt and Memphis will meet for the first time on Saturday. In 2009, the Panthers were schedule to play Memphis, but due to inclement weather, the game was cancelled. Pitt has a 2-2 record when playing teams in the C-USA.

Scouting Toledo
Toledo opens its season this weekend against Memphis and finishes the weekend against Pitt on Sunday. In 2009, the Rockets finished the season 24-30 and 14-12 in the MAC.


 

 

Sunday will mark the first meeting between the Panthers and Rockets. Pitt went 15-6 against non-conference opponents in 2009 while Toledo finished 10-18 in non-conference action.

Strong Start
Junior third baseman Joe Leonard picked up where he left off last season. In the season-opening series at Wofford, Leonard batted .533 through three games including 11 RBI, four doubles and a grand slam on the weekend.

Jordano Leads The Way
In his 13th season as head coach, Joe Jordano has collected 330 wins at Pitt to add to his total of 613 career wins. In 2010 Jordano and the Panthers’ expectations are high. With the majority of his lineup returning, Jordano is optimistic about Pitt’s chances heading into the season.
