Panthers Gear Up for Bulldog Challenge

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team will travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Charleston Crab House Shootout, presented by Homewood Suites and hosted by The Citadel.  Over the weekend the Panthers will face The Citadel (4-3), UNC Asheville (3-4), and VCU (5-0) at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on March 1-3 respectively.  Fans can watch the Panther's game on Friday, March 1, against The Citadel, online for a small fee.

The Panthers enter the weekend with a 5-1 record.  Pitt took the weekend series against Wofford picking up a 4-3 win on Saturday and splitting a double-header on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, the Panthers are led offensively by Eric Hess (SO, Erie, Pa.) who currently leads the team with a .478 batting average.  On the season, Hess has recorded 11 hits, four of them being doubles, and eight RBIs.  He also stands second in slugging percentage (.783).  A newcomer to the starting lineup, Hess has been an outstanding addition for the Panthers.

Also contributing to the Panthers' offense are Sam Parente (SR, Pittston, Pa.) and Casey Roche (JR, Downingtown, Pa.).  Parente holds a .467 batting average and leads the team in hits (14).  Roche, who started off the season by winning both Big East Player of the Week and CollegeBaseball360 National Player of the Week in week one, leads the team in runs scored (12) and is third on the team in both batting average (.462) and slugging percentage (.692).

The Citadel is entering the weekend with a 4-3 record.  They are led offensively by junior Tyler Griffin who is batting .484 and has 15 hits with 11 RBIs on the season.


 

 

UNC Asheville heads into the weekend with a 3-4 record.  The Bulldogs are led offensively by sophomore Kyle Towles who is batting .500 and has 11 hits and 6 RBIs thus far.

And contesting Pitt with an undefeated record of 5-0 on the season will be VCU.  The Rams will be led by freshman James Bunn who has a batting average of .438 and a slugging percentage of .579.

Pitt will return the usual trio to the mound this weekend. Starting off the Bulldog Challenge against The Citadel will be Ethan Mildren (JR, Hopwood, Pa.). Mildren leads the Panthers with a 2.40 ERA and is coming into the game with a 1-0 record on the season.  In his last start, Mildren struck out seven with no walks in 8.0 innings.

Matt Wotherspoon (JR, Mountain Top, Pa.) (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will take on UNC Asheville and to close out the weekend for the Panthers Rhys Aldenhoven (JR, Victoria, Australia) (1-0, 5.73 ERA) will face VCU.
