April 11, 2013

PITTSBURGH – The 21-9 University of Pittsburgh baseball team will return home and to Big East play this weekend when it hosts No. 16 Notre Dame for a three-game set at Charles L. Cost Field at the Peterson Sports Complex.

Coming off an outstanding offensive performance against Youngstown State on Tuesday, the Panthers continue to lead the Big East in six offensive categories, including on-base percentage (.409), slugging percentage (.452), runs (246), home runs (26), RBI (217), and total bases (485).  Due to the offensive successes, Pitt also falls second in the Big East in batting average (.303), walks (153), and hits (325).

Proving to be extremely reliable on the offensive end all season, Casey Roche (JR./Downingtown, Pa.) will lead the Panthers into the weekend series.  Roche is coming off a stellar performance after hitting for the cycle and recording a grand slam and 10 RBIs in the Panther’s win at Youngstown State.  He leads the team in batting average (.376), plate appearances (125), runs scored (33), hits (47), RBI (43), and total bases (75).  Of those categories, Roche leads the Big East in hits, RBI, and total bases.

Pitt will return the customary three to the mound this weekend with Ethan Mildren (JR./ Hopwood, Pa.) throwing the first pitch between the two teams.  The trio of Mildren, Matt Wotherspoon (JR./Mountain Top, Pa.), and Rhys Aldenhoven (JR./Victoria, Australia) combine for a 2.84 ERA and a solid 14-3 record.

The 19-11 Fighting Irish are led by junior Eric Jagielo who currently holds a .392 batting average and leads the team in hits (40), doubles (7), home runs (7), RBI (28), total bases (68), and slugging percentage (.667).  He leads the Big East in batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage (.515).
