No. 25 Pitt Panthers Gear Up to Host Rutgers

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (26-10, 6-3 Big East) will host Rutgers (18-16, 8-4 Big East) this weekend for a three-game set to be held at Charles L. Cost Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.

Coming of a 2-1 record in their midweek games, the Panthers will host the Scarlet Knights on Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 20 at 3 p.m., and Sunday, April 21 at 12 p.m.

An offensive powerhouse, Pitt continues to lead the Big East in seven major offensive categories, including slugging percentage (.468), on-base percentage (.410), runs scored (290), hits (381), runs batted in (256), home runs (37), and total bases (586).  The Panthers also fall second in batting average (.304).

Leading Pitt offensively into the weekend will be Casey Roche (JR/Downingtown, Pa.) who leads the team and Big East in runs scored (41), hits (55), RBIs (50), and total bases (93).

Additionally Steven Shelinsky, Jr. (JR/Yardley, Pa.) ranks seventh among all collegiate players in home runs (11) and currently leads the Big East and team in home runs and slugging percentage (.676).  He also falls second on the team with 38 RBIs.

Returning to the mound this weekend will be two of the usual three starting pitchers.  Ethan Mildren (JR/ Hopwood, Pa.) will be the first Panther pitcher to see the Scarlet Knights bats and Matt Wotherspoon (JR/Mountain Top, Pa.) will complete the duet on Saturday afternoon.  Mildren boasts a 2.48 ERA, second on the team, and a 6-2 record through 69.0 innings pitched.  Wotherspoon holds a 2.98 ERA and a 5-1 record with 66.1 innings pitched.  The two currently combine for an impressive 2.73 ERA.


 

 

Leading the Scarlet Knights into the weekend will be sophomore outfielder Vinny Zarrillo.  He holds the teams' highest batting average (.367) and leads the team in plate appearances (128), hits (47), triples (4), slugging percentage (.492), and on-base percentage (.446).

The all-time series record belongs to Rutgers (28-15); however, the Panthers have won five of the last six games against the Scarlet Knights.
