Pitt Drops 3-0 Contest to No. 20 Clemson

April 19, 2014

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh (16-22, 8-12 ACC) baseball team fell to the No. 20 Clemson Tigers (24-14, 12-7 ACC), 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field at the Peterson Sports Complex.

Daniel Gossett (5-0, 1.90 ERA) earned the win after throwing nine scoreless innings, allowing three hits, and striking out seven. TJ Zeuch (1-3, 2.78 ERA) was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs in eight innings of baseball.

"I thought both starting pitchers did a solid job today," head coach Joe Jordano said. "TJ was a little nervous in the first inning, his first start in the ACC and it showed a little bit. He walked a couple of guys and gave up a well-placed hit and it was a 3-0 ballgame. As a team, we're frustrated and we're disappointed but I can assure you we're going to continue to work extremely hard to get this fixed tomorrow."

After an eight-pitch at-bat, TJ Zeuch (FR/Mason, Ohio) gave up a leadoff base on balls to Tyler Slaton. Tyler Krieger followed with a single through the right side of the infield. With runners on first and second, a Manny Pazos (FR/Miami, Fl.) passed ball allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. Garrett Boulware earned a full-count walk to load the bases with no outs. Steven Duggar put the Tigers up 1-0 with a line-drive down the right field line that Eric Hess (JR/Erie, Pa.) knocked down for the first out of the inning. Steve Wilkerson stepped to the plate with two outs and dropped a single into shallow center field to cross two more runs and give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

After allowing three runs in the top of the first, TJ Zeuch pitched seven scoreless innings of baseball, adding to a new career high of eight innings pitched. After giving up two singles in the top of the first, he allowed just one hit in the next seven innings. He struck out five while forcing six batters to pop out and 13 to groundout on a career-high of 111 pitches.

Dylan Wolsonovich singled to left-center with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He advanced to second base after a wild pitch delivered by Gossett.  With two outs, Steven Shelinsky Jr. (SR/Yardley, Pa.) stepped to the plate to pinch hit for Manny Pazos. After an eight-pitch at-bat, Shelinsky flew out to right field to end the inning and the Panther's scoring threat.

Jon Danielczyk (SR/Erie, Pa.) was called in to relieve TJ Zeuch in the top of the ninth. Chris Okey reached on an infield error, but was thrown out trying to reach second by Tyler Albert (JR/Montoursville, Pa.) for the first out of the inning. With two outs, Boo Vazquez (JR/Youngstown, Ohio) recorded the final out at the wall in left field.

Daniel Gossett returned for the bottom of the ninth and threw 14 pitches to secure the Clemson victory.
