PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh sophomore catcher Elvin Soto (SO/New York, N.Y.) has been selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 16th round (480 overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft.

“Elvin has been waiting for this day, certainly for the past two years,” said Pitt head coach Joe Jordano. “I believe Elvin felt that he deserved to be drafted out of high school and when that did not happen I think he made it an absolute goal to be drafted after his sophomore year.”

Soto, who is the 27th Pitt player selected during the Jordano Era and second this season, becomes the second Panther selected by the D-Backs (Jason Conti, 1996).

Soto is coming off a 2013 season where he was a first team All-Big East selection hitting .320 with six homeruns and 43 RBI.

“I think he’s ready,” said Jordano. “He knows that he has a lot of work to do but when he is in an environment where it is baseball 24/7 he’s really going to excel and we wish him great success.”

For his career, Soto has batted .284 with 12 homeruns and 80 RBI.
