PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh junior right-handed pitcher Matt Wotherspoon (JR/Mountain Top, Pa.) has been selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 20th round (606 overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft.

“Matt is an extremely hard worker who has a great passion for not only the University but our program who will have an opportunity to play professionally,” said Pitt head coach Joe Jordano. “At this stage, I think it’s going to be up to him to make a decision on whether to continue his collegiate career and pitch in the ACC or to start his professional career. I think either way he’s in a good spot and we wish him nothing but great success.”

Wotherspoon, who becomes the 28th Pitt player selected during the Jordano Era and third this season, is the fourth Panther selected by the Tigers and first since Chris Sedon in 2009.

Wotherspoon is coming off a 2013 season where he was named a second team All-Big East selection after going 9-3 with a 3.70 ERA and a team-best 85 strikeouts.

For his career, Wotherspoon has a 17-9 record with a 4.29 ERA with five complete games and 190 strikeouts. Wotherspoon is among the best pitchers in Pitt history ranking sixth in career strikeouts and innings pitched, seventh in career wins and eighth in games started.
