PITTSBURGH — Vegas defeated Navy, 11-6, to earn a 2-0 series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
Vegas added to its cushion in the top of the third with three more runs. Matt Johnson (JR/Plano, Texas) brought the first run to the plate on a beautiful squeeze play. Casey Roche (SR/Downingtown, Pa.) grounded into a fielder’s choices and Caleb Parry (FR/Riverside, Calif.) roped an RBI single into right to round out the scoring in the top of the third and give the Vegas squad a 4-0 lead.
Navy responded in the home half of the third when Steven Shelinsky Jr. (SR/Furlong, Pa.) brought home Keaton Miller (JR/Webster, Texas) with a triple to the gap in right center. Shelisnky scored shortly thereafter on an Eric Hess (JR/Erie, Pa.) fielders’ choice cutting the lead in half, 4-2.
Vegas quickly retook a four run lead when Roche hammered a two-run homerun over the wall in left in the top of the fourth but Navy answered when Boo Vazquez (SO/Youngstown, Ohio) cranked a two-run shot of his own to dead center field.
Nick Montefusco (FR/Medford, N.J.) and Josh Mitchell (FR/Ridgway, Pa.) matched scoreless fifth innings on the mound before Navy again chipped into the Vegas lead in the bottom of the sixth with another Vazquez bomb, this one a solo shot to right.
After Renan Rodriguez (SO/Miami, Fla.) threw up a pair of scoreless innings with two strikeouts for Navy, the squad was able to knot the score in the bottom of the seventh. Hess led off the inning with a walk and Manny Pazos (FR/Miami, Fla.) followed with a double to center to put runners on second and third with no outs. A fielding error allowed the tying run to score but no more runs would cross the plate thanks to solid pitching from Harvey.
Vegas bounced back with two in the eighth, one in the ninth and two more in the 10th to earn to win.
In the eighth, Parry worked a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Johnson then brought home the second run of the inning with a double down the leftfield line.
Vegas’ run in the ninth came off a Parry fielder’s choice and the runs in the 10th came off sac flies from Roche and Frabasillo.
While the Vegas bats helped them secure the victory, Andrew Belfiglio (SO/Newtown Square, Pa.) and Nick Parnell (JR/Midlothian, Va.) kept the Navy squad off the board for the final two innings en route to the win.
