THE STORYLINE

Aron Nwankwo (pronounced Nah-WONK-woah) begins his fourth season on the Pitt Basketball team as a walk-on. A full academic scholarship recipient, Nwankwo plans to enter the pre-Med program. He will make an impact on the defensive end where he adds energy, size and rebounding ability.

CAREER

Three-time Big East Academic All-Star honoree...Walk-on neuroscience major...Played in 24 games and 39 minutes in his career...Redshirted the 2012-13 season.

2013-14

Played in nine games and 16 minutes off the bench at power forward...Scored a career-high five points (2-2 FG), hit first career 3-pointer and grabbed a rebound vs. Howard, 11/17.

2012-13

Redshirted the 2012-13 season...Big East Academic All-Star selection.

2011-12

Named a Big East Academic All-Star...Played in five games and eight minutes on year (Princeton, 3/19; St. John's, 2/29; St. Francis, Pa., 12/20, VMI, 12/6, Albany, 11/11).

2010-11

Named a Big East Academic All Star...Earned varsity letter after appearing in 10 games and 15 total minutes on year...Scored first career point on a free throw vs. Delaware State, 12/8.

HIGH SCHOOL

A 2010 graduate of Baltimore City College High School where he lettered in basketball for head coach Mike Daniel...Helped guide the No. 1 ranked Baltimore City Black Knights to back-to-back Class 2A state titles...City College became the first city school to win back-to-back state titles since 2006...Earned the Baltimore Basketball Academy's 2010 Scholar-Athlete Award sponsored by State Farm...Selected to play in the Baltimore City vs. County Senior All-Star Game...Helped guide City High School to a 23-2 record, wins in each of its last 11 games and Class 2A state title in 2010 with a 56-45 win over Gwynn Park in the title game...Made a significant impact on the defensive end in the state title game played at the Comcast Center...Advanced to the state title game with a 62-38 semifinal win over Easton H.S....Helped team claim its first-ever Class 2A state title as a junior with a 55-42 win over Douglas H.S. in 2009...City H.S. finished 21-6 during his junior season...Played on the Baltimore Stars AAU team, which traveled to Pittsburgh to play in the Pitt JamFest...Four-year Honor Roll student...Also played defender on the lacrosse team where he helped lead the Knights to a 37-game league win streak, 10-1 overall and 9-0 Baltimore City record...His City H.S. lacrosse program won three straight city titles.

Born Aron Nwankwo on April 21, 1992...Son of Benjamin Nwankwo and Stephanie Phillips...Attending Pitt on full academic scholarship...Graduate of City H.S. with a perfect 4.0 grade point average...Played in the Pitt JamFest AAU tournament at the Petersen Events Center on April 24, 2010...Head Coach Jamie Dixon offered him a walk-on spot following the event...Follows in the footsteps of two other Pitt Baltimore area players: Jermaine Dixon and Chase Adams and is one of two Baltimore area players on this year's roster (Durand Johnson)...Chose Pitt for its pre-Med program with the opportunity to play on its top college basketball program...Said it was a "dream come true" and that he would gain the "best of both worlds" while receiving an academic scholarship offer to Pitt...Also recruited by Johns Hopkins, Penn State, Elon and NJIT...Neuroscience major.
