Barry Rohrssen Bio (pdf)

Named associate head coach on April 5, 2004, Barry Rohrssen is in his seventh season as a member of the Pittsburgh basketball coaching staff. Rohrssen came to Pitt in 1999 and has played a vital role in the Panthers' dramatic rise to prominence.

Over the past four seasons, Pittsburgh has compiled a 108-25 record (.812 winning percentage), won three straight Big East regular season titles and is one of only nine schools nationally to advance to three straight NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" appearances during that time. In 2003-04, Pittsburgh set a school-record with a 31-5 record and won the Big East regular-season title. Pittsburgh's 2002-03 campaign saw the Panthers win the school's first-ever Big East Tournament Championship. In 2001-02, Pittsburgh won a then school-record 29 games and registered the first of back-to-back Big East West Division titles.

Promoted to associate head coach in 2004, Rohrssen has 12 years of major college coaching experience. His main responsibilities include working with the Panthers post players, recruiting prospective student-athletes and scheduling future opponents.

"Barry has been an integral part in the success of this program," Dixon said. "He has a great coaching background, is a good recruiter with outstanding contacts and has an understanding of how we run our program."

Prior to Pittsburgh, Rohrssen spent four seasons (1995-99) at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas as the school's director of basketball operations. While at UNLV, the program experienced a resurgence as the Runnin' Rebels captured the 1998 Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship and advanced to postseason play in three of his four years. Under Head Coach Bill Bayno, Rohrssen served as a liaison to the athletic administration and other school officials. His duties also included coordination of the student-athletes' game, practice and daily schedules as well as serving as UNLV's director of summer basketball camps.

Prior to UNLV, Rohrssen was an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater, St. Francis (N.Y.) College, from 1993-95 under Head Coach Ron Ganulin. He was responsible for organizing the film exchange program to scout upcoming opponents, overseeing the strength and conditioning program and monitoring the student-athletes' academic performance. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native also played for the Terriers from 1981-83 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management in 1983.

Rohrssen also has extensive international basketball coaching experience. In both 1991 and 1992, Rohrssen represented the United States at the World Invitational Championships in both Poland and England, respectively. He also co-coached an American All-Star team in 1998 that finished 5-0 in Tahiti.

During the summer of 2000, he served as an assistant coach with a United States Junior Team which competed at an international tournament in Leon, Spain. The squad included former Panthers players Julius Page and Mark McCarroll. Later that summer, Rohrssen helped lead a New York City squad that included McCarroll and former Panther Ricardo Greer to a gold medal title at the 2000 Empire State Games.

Rohrssen played in the Catholic High School Athletic Association at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn and has been elected to the school's Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Combining his enthusiasm for basketball and desire to give back to the game and community, Rohrssen has coordinated clinics, given lectures and is active in promoting basketball on a local, national and international level. In addition, he is a member of the Screen Actor's Guild and has appeared in feature films, television shows and commercials.

"I am proud of my association with this university," Rohrssen said. "I love the city of Pittsburgh and feel that it's home. We have a special group of players, some talented recruits and tremendous support from our administration, alumni and fans. It's a great place to be."
