POST-GAME QUOTESHEET

Pitt at West Virginia, WVU Coliseum, January 25, 2009

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon

Opening Comments:

“As tough as a place this is to play and a how good of a team this is and how well- coached they are, among other things, this is a very impressive win for us and a very good win in a lot of ways.”

On Pitt’s performance:

“We know how good they are and we came and executed throughout. I thought we really played well. I thought we really took care of the ball, especially in the second half and it was not giving them any transition buckets on our turnovers.”

On if there were any regrets in the performance:

“The only thing that I can really think of is that we didn’t out rebound them. We challenged our guys to get it done on the rebounding, but again they are a very good rebounding team, as all Coach (Bob) Huggins’ teams are.”

On the way his players performed in a tough road atmosphere:

“We did a lot of great things and you have to if you are going to win at this place, against that coach with those players. I am very proud of how our guys played and how smart they were in preparation. We took away some things that we talked about in walk-through the last few days. We had days to prepare and that was key. We had a number of days and I think we really took advantage of that.”

On the play of Sam Young:

“That is what he (Sam Young) does, there are times when we want him to get to the basketball and post up a little more.  But he is shooting a pretty good percentage from three and we want him to get to the free throw line and he is able to do that a little bit more. But again, it is hard to play when you have two fouls right away in the first half and you get a third seven seconds into the second half.”

On foul trouble and Pitt’s depth:

“We have great depth and that was key for us. I thought our four guys off the bench, for the minutes they played, gave quality minutes.”

On his team’s free throw shooting:

“We are who we are. We are not going to lead the county in free throw shooting. 80 percent, 65 percent you are talking about two three points and 20 shot, you have to rebound.”

Quoting West Virginia Coach Bob Huggins

On the difference in the second half:

“They got us out of doing what kept us in the game in the first half. We didn’t pass the ball and we have to move them. I felt we could rebound as long as we moved them, as long as we kept them out of the lane. You can’t have those big, wide bodies stand in the lane and we just got down and tried to stop them in the lane and that is a recipe for disaster.”

On the play of Pitt’s Sam Young

“He’s a great player and he’s been doing that for a long time. We didn’t guard the way we normally guard, but they’re pretty good. I think they’re having one of those years where when they have open shots they make them and if you watch teams in the NCAA Tournament, when they have open shots they make them. You go back and think about the Arizona game and them making a big run at us and Darris (Nichols) has an open shot and he makes it, Duke started to make a run and Alex (Ruoff) has a wide open shot and he makes it. They’ve had a year like that and (Jermaine) Dixon is shooting something like 23 percent from three. When he was open he made them and that’s what good teams do. We gave Sam some open looks and he made them.”

On learning from losing

“I’m not a big proponent on losing to learn. I think you need to learn every time you go out to play. I told this bunch the first day, the very first day that we can win, we’re going to win, but we can’t not do things and when we haven’t done things right its got us. We don’t have a shot blocker to erase things and we don’t have a post player we can throw the ball to score, we’re void of both of those things.”
