PITTSBURGH (AP) - Julius Page scored 16 points and Pittsburgh held
Georgetown to 21 second-half points as the Panthers defeated the Hoyas 67-56
Saturday afternoon.
The victory gave Pitt (18-3, 6-2 Big East) a two-game sweep over Georgetown
(12-7, 3-4) for the first time since the Panthers joined the Big East during
the 1982-83 season.
Georgetown held a 35-33 lead at the half but Pitt outscored the Hoyas 14-4
the first 6:23 of the second to take a 47-39 lead. The closest Georgetown would
come to the Panthers after that was six points. Pitt managed to extend their
lead to as many as 13 points in the second half.
Pitt's defense allowed only five of 28 field goals attempted (17.9 percent)
in the final 20 minutes after the Hoyas had connected on 14 of 24 shots the
first half. Meanwhile, Pitt made nine of 21 shots in the second half.
The Panthers also did an outstanding job surrounding Georgetown's Mike
Sweetney. In the first meeting between the two teams a week ago, Sweetney, who
averages 19.3 points per game, scored 24 points. He finished Saturday's game
with six points and six rebounds.
Tony Bethel was Georgetown's leading scorer with 20 points and Wesley Wilson
added 10. Jaron Brown had 12 points for Pitt, Donatas Zavackas finished with 11
