*With the win, Pitt improved to 159-17 in the Petersen Events Center and 68-14 against Big East opponents in the venue. Pitt has now won 65 of its past 72 home games and 30 of its last 35 Big East Conference home games.
*The Panthers are on a four-game winning streak only five games after point guard Tray Woodall’s return from injury. When Woodall was unable to play or attempted to play while injured, Pitt was 5-8 and suffered an eight-game losing streak.
*The game marked Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon’s 300th career game as the Panthers’ head coach. Now in his 13th year at Pitt and ninth as a head coach, he holds a 231-69 (77 percent) record.
*The Panthers have now won each of their last four matchups against Villanova and won nine consecutive home games the Wildcats. Pitt also improved to 5-0 against Villanova in the Petersen Events Center and 21-5 all-time vs. Villanova in Pittsburgh. Villanova leads the all-time series with a 32-31 all-time record.
*Pitt’s backcourt of Tray Woodall (29 points) and Ashton Gibbs (25 points) scored 54 of Pitt’s 79 points in the game. The duo combined for 14-26 shooting (53.8 percent), 7-14 (50 percent) 3-point shooting and a perfect 19-19 from the free throw line.
*Woodall’s 29 points and a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line mark new career-highs. His previous scoring career-high (25) came in a season-opening 89-56 win against Albany on Nov. 11, 2011. The game marks his third career contest with 20 points or more, his second consecutive (he scored 24 at West Virginia on Jan. 30) and it is his 19th career scoring game in double figures. It was his eighth game scoring in double figures this season and his first career game with back-to-back games scoring at least 20 points.
*Gibbs’ 25 points marked his eighth 20 point scoring game of the year and the 31st of his career. Gibbs was 4-for-8 from 3-point range. His eight 3-point attempts give him 661 for his career as he surpassed Brandin Knight’s 654 attempts for a new Pitt record. Gibbs already holds the record for made 3-pointers made with 274. He was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Gibbs now has 1,610 points for his career at Pitt and needs 24 more points to pass Brian Shorter for 11th on Pitt’s all-time scoring list.
*The Panthers were 27-for-31 (87.1 percent) from the free throw line. That 87.1 percent is the team’s second-best free-throw shooting percentage of the season. The team’s best free throw shooting percentage came on Nov. 16, 2011 when it was 13-for-14 (92.9 percent) against Long Beach State.
*Pitt’s 27 made free throws were the most that it has converted this season. The Panthers have shot over 80 percent from the free throw line in each of their past three games. Over the team’s current four-game winning streak Pitt is 78-for-94 (82.9 percent) from the free throw line. In contrast, during Pitt’s eight-game losing streak they were a combined 87-for-135 (64.4 percent) from the free throw line.
*Cameron Wright set a career-high with four steals. His previous career-high was two, which he had accumulated on three different occasions.
*The Panthers drew 24 personal fouls against Villanova, tying the second most fouls an opponent has committed against Pitt this season.
