Princeton at Pitt, CBI Opening Round, March 19, 2012, Petersen Events Center
Pitt 82, Princeton 61

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon:

Opening Statement:

“I thought in the first half we played really well. We know they’re a tough team to play against. I thought it was a good couple of days for us to re-learn and go through again how Princeton plays. It’s similar to how Georgetown plays, so it was good for us in that regard. A lot of similar stuff and plays and actions, so since we just played them that helped us. I think it’ll also help us in the future. Everyone in the Ivy League told us that they were playing the best basketball in the league at the end of the year. I think they’d won eight of the last nine and beat Harvard who obviously won the league. If there had been a (an Ivy League) tournament, I think a lot of people felt they might have been the favorite going in. We know how good they were and we played very well in the first half.

We moved the ball, especially in that stretch in the second half. I thought we defended very well except for the five man which we knew was going to be a problem for us, having to guard out on the perimeter. His three 3’s in the first half were the one setback, the one disappointment for us. Very good job by our guys with the passing. We challenged Tray to get 10 assists and he got 11. I thought Lamar was terrific again and all these minutes are good for him going forward. As healthy as we’ve been all year this last week, but John Johnson hurt his back yesterday and we tried it today and he couldn’t go. Cameron had hurt his wrist and so he was out, but he was able to play today. It was very good to see that from him. It was good minutes for those guys and I’m proud of how we came out and played in this situation.”

On winning the battle in the paint:

“I think it’s something that when we look back we didn’t do a good enough job this year of getting the ball inside. That’s been an emphasis these last couple of games. We’re especially trying to do post-ups. We went inside early, and got a couple baskets from Talib. We also went inside to Dante and I think it’s something we should have done better early in the year. When we got in that eight game losing streak that was part of our lack of execution. We didn’t get the ball inside as much as we wanted to. Again that eight game losing streak is a long way away, but it’s something we could never overcome and something that we recognize.”

On what they’re getting out of the CBI tournament:

“Obviously it’s not where we want to be right now, we want to be in the NCAA tournament and 10 years of doing that, very few teams have done that. Our season was not what we wanted it to be, but these guys want to keep playing. I think they’ve made it very clear that they want to be out there. In practice, they’re getting in early and the way we’ve come out from the start in both games showed that these guys wanted to play. They didn’t do during the year what they wanted to do. They disappointed themselves, they disappointed each other and I think we’re getting as much out of it as we can.”

On the play of Tray Woodall:

“Eight rebounds, 11 assists, I mean he’s played really well these last two games. Hopefully this is getting across to him that this is what we’ll need from him and shows him what he can be. He played terrific today. He got 11 assists and we wanted ten from him, and it was against a very good team.”

Quoting Pitt’s Tray Woodall:

On the importance of practices before the game:

“Practices have been real intense.  We have been trying to simulate game situations in practices.  The guys have been working hard.  We have been focusing on getting stops, boxing out and rebounding.  I definitely think it carried over into the game.”

On the lack of pressure in this tournament:

“We are just playing basketball.  Coach Dixon told us to go out there, play, and have fun.  You see a lot of our guys smiling out on the court and more guys playing more unselfish.”

On the senior’s playing time:

“The young guys are still learning from the older guys.  It’s a learning experience for them.  We want to get the younger guys some playing time but at the same time we have guys like Nasir Robinson who play so hard that that they can pick the intensity up for next year.  It’s important for us to play the same guys that have been playing because we want to get better as a team and Coach Dixon is still working to get the older guys better also. We can’t just burry them in the bench.  We want to keep the same rotation that we have been playing with the whole season.”

Quoting Pitt’s Lamar Patterson:

On the senior’s playing time:

“We started with them.  We should end with them also.  They are our leaders.”

On his shooting in tonight’s game:

“I saw the first couple shots go in so I kept testing them.  They continued to fall.  That’s what my teammates tell me to do.  They say to shoot the open shot so that is what I did.”

Quoting Princeton Head Coach Mitch Henderson

Opening statement:

“We have been playing really good basketball and I’m proud of our seniors.  We had a rough start to our season at 1-5 and for us to finish the way we did, that was really important for us.  We have an important senior class that chose Princeton when we were down.  Doug Davis, Pat Saunders and John Comfort chose Princeton and did something to get us back to where we need to be and that is important.  Doug Davis is now the second leading scorer in Princeton history behind Bill Bradley.  We are sorry to see the seniors go.  We knew that when Pitt scored points they were dangerous.  I thought we played well for spurts in the second half, but they were better.  That is a good Pitt team.”

On how the first half transpired:

“It was unexpected.  You can’t give up 49 points and expect to win a game.  We couldn’t do it tonight.”

On getting points in the paint:

“Our emphasis to start the game was to get the ball inside and you have to credit Pitt for that.  They bothered us with what we were trying to do.”

On playing NCAA Tournament type teams and then playing Pitt:

“It’s so different from when you see a team early in the year and then later in the year.  We went down and saw Florida State at Florida State and that is what I wanted to do with this tournament was play a team out of your area.  This is a good Pitt team.  They are used to winning games here and we knew that.”

On Pitt getting back to NCAA Tournament:

“It’s a tournament team, no doubt about it.  This is a good team, Coach Dixon is a good coach, they are going to get back to where they need to be.”
