10/26 - Coach Dixon post-scrimmage comments

PITTSBURGH--Four players reached double figures to lead the Pitt Gold Squad to a 63-54 victory over the Blue Squad as part of the University of Pittsburgh's Fan Fest Scrimmage Sunday at the Petersen Events Center. The fifth annual Fan Fest Scrimmage was offered to fans as the first official glimpse of the 2008-09 Pitt men's and women's basketball teams.


DeJuan Blair led all scorers and rebounders with 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Gold Team. He converted 10 of his 12 field goal attempts and finished with six offensive rebounds. Tyrell Biggs added 13 points while Brad Wanamaker and Ashton Gibbs (2-3 3FG) each finished with 12 points for the Gold Team.


Led by Blair, Biggs, Wanamaker and Gibbs, the Gold Squad built a 29-20 halftime advantage. It used a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with 10:09 to go before halftime, then extended its lead to as many as 11 points late in the first half.


In the second half, the Blue Team cut the lead to as few as three points (49-46 with 5:07 left) but the Gold Team responded with a Blair layup, a Biggs jumper and two free throws from Blair.


The Blue Squad was led by Jermaine Dixon's 16 points. Dixon connected on 3-5 3-point attempts. Sam Young finished with 14 points and Nasir Robinson contributed 11. Gary McGhee also contributed eight points and seven rebounds.


The Gold Squad totaled 12 offensive rebounds en route to a 29-19 advantage over the Blue Team. Both teams shot the ball well as the Gold hit 50 percent (23-56) of its field goals and the Blue converted 48.7 percent (19-39).


Pitt played two 16-minute halves.


The scrimmage was part of the 2008-09 Basketball Fan Fest event which took place Sunday at the Petersen Events Center. The event featured both the Pitt men's and women's basketball teams, a combined autograph session for both squads, photo opportunities, inflatable games, and scrimmages featuring both the men's and women's basketball teams.


Pitt will enter the 2008-09 season ranked as a consensus top 10 team. Pitt returns three starters, each of its top three scorers and seven of its top 10 players from a squad that captured the Big East Championship, finished 27-10 overall and advanced to NCAA Tournament play for a seventh consecutive season. Seniors Sam Young, Levance Fields and Tyrell Biggs all return to the squad along with sophomores DeJuan Blair, Gilbert Brown, Brad Wanamaker and Gary McGhee.


Pitt opens its season with two exhibition games at the Petersen Events Center: vs. Seton Hill (Sunday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.) and vs. LaRoche (Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.). The Panthers will host their second annual Alumni Game prior to the LaRoche game at 11 a.m.
