PITTSBURGH-- Six players reached double figures in leading the Pitt men's basketball team to a 103-45 exhibition victory over NCAA Division III Carnegie Mellon Wednesday evening before 7,345 fans at the Petersen Events Center. The contest marked Pitt's first exhibition game of the season.
Pitt will play its second exhibition game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against California University (Pa.). California (Pa.) dropped a 79-78 contest Wednesday at Maryland on Wednesday. Pitt opens regular season play in the Maggie Dixon Classic on Sunday, Nov. 12 at West Point against Western Michigan.
Six players reached double figures for the Panthers. Tyrell Biggs (11 points/14 rebounds) and Aaron Gray (12 points/15 rebounds) both registered double-doubles, Antonio Graves scored a game-high 17 points on 6-12 shooting, Mike Cook finished with 16 points, Sam Young scored 14 points and Ronald Ramon added 11 points and a game-high six assists.
Pitt jumped out to a 21-2 lead with 12:18 remaining the first half and led 48-17 at halftime.
Pitt converted 48.1 percent (38-79) of its field goals and outrebounded Carnegie Mellon 66-37.
Pitt and Carnegie Mellon have met 124 times since 1906-07 as the Panthers own a 106-18 advantage in non-exhibition games. The contest marked the second time Pitt and Carnegie Mellon have met in an exhibition game over the last three seasons. Pitt claimed a 97-70 victory in 2004-05.
