PITT-HOUSTON BAPTIST POST-GAME NOTES

 

*Pitt's 59 rebounds set a school record. The previous high was 58 against Providence (2/7/87). Their 27 offensive boards also marked a school record.

 

*Sam Young 22 points set a new career high. His previous best was 21 last season against West Virginia (2/7/07). Tonight also marked the ninth time in twelve games dating back to last season that Young has scored in double figures. Young's 15 field goal attempts also marked a Petersen Events Center record, eclipsing the mark of 11 which was tied on four separate occasions (last by Aaron Gray against Northeastern on 11/17/06).

 

*Freshman DeJuan Blair made his first career start at center for Pitt. Blair became Pitt's first freshman to start on opening day since Ronald Ramon started at guard vs. Howard on Nov. 11, 2004.

 

*DeJuan Blair `s 20 points and 14 rebounds rank second among the top debut games for a freshman. Ricardo Greer had 21 points (11/17/97) and Sam Clancy grabbed 16 rebounds (11/26/77) to top those lists.

 

*Blair's double-double is the first by a Pitt freshman in a debut game since Sean Miller accomplished the feat on 11/28/87.

 

*Keith Benjamin's six field goals and 16 points tied career highs. His 11 field goal attempts and four three-point field goals and eight three-point attempts were also career highs.

 

*Mike Cook's three steals tied a career high (vs. Charlotte, 2/7/04).

 

*Tyrell Biggs' three assists were a career high.

 

*Pitt's 103 points tonight set a new high in the Petersen Events Center. The previous best was 100 against Notre Dame (1/4/06). It is Pitt's highest output since 12/16/95 when the Panthers defeated Long Island, 108-67.

 

*Pitt's 42 team field goals tied a Petersen Events Center record. The last time the Panthers accomplished that feat was against St. Francis (Pa.) on 11/22/03. Its 92 field goals attempts also eclipsed a team high at the Events Center, which was previously set at 79 on 1/4/06, an overtime win against Notre Dame.

 

*Pitt's 34 three-point attempts tonight is a new record at the Petersen Events Center, surpassing the Panthers total of 31 against Florida A&M on 12/30/06.

 

*The Panthers' 31 assists eclipsed the previous team best at the Petersen Events Center, which was 29 against St. Francis (Pa.) (11/22/03).

 

 *Pitt's 16 steals set a new high in the Petersen Events Center (previous best 13, Seton Hall 3/5/03). It also eclipsed the team's best performance in the Jamie Dixon Era (12, vs. St. John's (1/18/05).

 

*Ronald Ramon's two 3-point field goals moved him past Jarrett Lockhart (167) on the all-time list for treys. He now has 168 for his career.

 

*Levance Fields moved up to 18th on the all-time assists list, surpassing Julius Page (244 assists). His six assists tonight give him 248 for his career.

 

*Ronald Ramon made his first start at guard in 37 games. His last start was in Pitt's NCAA Tournament game against Bradley on March 19, 2004.

 

*With the win, Pitt won its 11th consecutive opening day contest dating back to Nov. 17, 1997. Pitt improves to 68-33 all-time in season openers.

 

*Pitt won its 20th consecutive home game against a non-conference opponent and improves to 48-1 vs. non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center. Additionally, Pitt has won 69 of its last 70 home games against regular season non-conference opponents.

 

*Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon improved to an undefeated 19-0 in games played in November. Combining his November and December records, Dixon owns a 48-2 record in pre-January contests.

 

*Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon improved to 106-30 all-time as Pitt's head coach.

 

*Pitt also won the 25th of its last 27 games against non-conference opponents.

 

*Pitt improves to 81-8 all-time in the Petersen Events Center. Head Coach Jamie Dixon now owns a 65-8 home record in beginning his fifth season at the helm.

 

*Pitt improved to 70-5 in the last seven years against non-conference competition.

 

*Tonight's victory marked the third time the Panthers have won by 40 points or more in the Petersen Events Center.

 

*Pitt held Houston Baptist to 62 points on the evening. Since Jamie Dixon became head coach, Pitt has held 113 of its 136 opponents under 70 points. Last year Pitt limited 31 of its 37 opponents under 70 points.

 

*Pitt is approaching the one million mark for total attendance. With tonight's crowd of 9,072 Pitt has now had 955,379 fans attend games in the six-year old Petersen Events Center.

 

*Pitt's bench outscored Houston Baptist's 34-22, making tonight the 55th time in the last 71 games that the Pitt reserves have outscored their opponents. Last year, Pitt's bench outscored its opponents in 27 of 37 games and outscored opponents by a 823-494 margin.
