POST-GAME QUOTESHEET

Pitt vs. Miami, Ohio, November 17, 2008, Petersen Events Center

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon:

Opening Statement:

“I’ve heard from other coach’s that playing against Miami is like spending two hours in the dentist’s office. Watching film on them and then playing this game, I would definitely have to agree with that statement. This team just grinds you down. They’re a tremendous, well-coached team that isn’t afraid to play anyone. I thought we prepared for this game very well. Our seniors really stepped up and helped our younger guys get ready for tonight. If they continue to show that type of leadership all year, our team can be very good.”

On Pitt’s play in the second-half:

“I thought we actually defended pretty well in the first half even though the score was close. I thought they got some bounces that led to easy buckets, and that’s going to happen from time to time. The big thing though was the rebounding. We can’t get outrebounded and expect to win. So, getting DeJuan Blair back in the second half and a renewed focus on getting the boards really helped us put the game away.”

On defending Michael Bramos:

“You don’t go in expecting to hold a very good scorer without a field goal, but I think his two quick fouls had a lot to do with that; when guys get in foul trouble early that can really take away their aggressiveness.  I thought all of our guys did a good job defending him though, too. We extended the screens and didn’t help too far off of him, giving him an easy basket. We also didn’t let him get to the foul line, which is where he gets a lot of his points.”

On Miami’s First Half Run:

“I thought we were very patient early on offense, but we kind of got away from that as the game progressed.  I thought we forced some drives and took some shots that were out of our offense. We did a much better job of attacking their defense in the second half. I can’t think of a shot that I’m unhappy with.”

On the play of Jermaine Dixon:

“He’s a quiet kid who’s really focused and really coming along well. He always seems to have more assists than I anticipate so clearly he’s passing the ball well, too. Jermaine’s got a very good shot too. It’s just a matter of finding consistency. “

Quoting Pitt’s Levance Fields:

On getting a double double:

“It feels really good. I was joking with my teammates that it always seems like I’m one assist or one point short of getting to 10. My teammates were able to knock some shots down tonight too, to help out that assist total. So it was a team effort.”

On Miami’s first half run:

“I thought we rushed our shots a little bit and it allowed them to get back in the game. That’s on me as a point guard. I have to make sure that I’m getting guys their shots and not taking bad ones myself. I take responsibility for what happened there, and fortunately we were able to get it corrected in the second half.”

Quoting Pitt’s DeJuan Blair:

On Pitt’s second half:

“We were very focused in the locker room at halftime. We knew that we couldn’t get outrebounded by this team and hope to win. In the second half we came out with a new attitude and we were able to get it done.”

Quoting Pitt’s Sam Young:

On his play in the first half:

“I was just trying to take what the defense gave me in the first half. There were other guys open for shots, so I just tried to make the right play and give the ball up. In the second half there was a little more space so I was able to drive and get a good shot off going towards the rim.”

Quoting Pitt’s Jermaine Dixon:

On his play:

“I was really glad I was able to knock down some shots tonight. I missed some open ones last time, so it felt good to hit them.  Tonight was also my first chance to guard someone really good, and I think I did a pretty good job with that. Considering the emphasis this team places on defense, that feels really good too.”

Quoting Miami, Ohio Head Coach Charlie Coles:

On the First Half:

“We fought back. We did a good job. DeJuan Blair was out for awhile and that helped us, but he’s a big guy.  We hustled, but we bounced back to being down 35-30. Even then, we couldn’t get the bounces. Pitt came up with a lot of those bounces.”

On the Second Half:

“We opened up with a shot that we didn’t want to take. That’s not what we wanted. We took that long shot, and then Pitt just went crazy. They opened up and we never got it back.  I was having a hard time. I ran out of ideas with about 15 minutes to go. Jermaine Dixon killed us tonight. That really hurt us.”

On Pitt:

“Pitt seems like a top-10 team.  They are strong, physical, but not dirty. They seemed like they enjoy playing together. They’re good.”
