POST-GAME QUOTESHEET

Eastern Kentucky at Pitt, November 19, 2009, Petersen Events Center

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon

Opening Statement:

“Our guys came out and responded to challenges we gave them in practice. Last game, it was moving the ball and tonight it was rebounding. Our guards were able to grab some of those long rebounds off of Eastern Kentucky’s shooting, so that’s a big step. Now, we have to work on putting it all together. Eastern Kentucky is a skilled team. They have excellent shooters in Josh Taylor and Justin Stommes. These are players that are going to be heard from, EKU is going to beat some good teams and they’re going to do well in the Ohio Valley Conference.”

On the play from Pitt’s bench:

“We were missing some guys because we got into foul trouble early. Lamar Patterson came in the first half and gave some good minutes and Dante Taylor stepped up in the second half. Chase Adams has been coming into the game and giving us solid time so far. I think down the stretch, we will be a well balanced team.”

On the center position:

“We’ve been getting good numbers from that position. Gary McGee and Dante Taylor have been playing great defense and they’re grabbing rebounds. It’s a unique situation and it’s different from what we been doing. We’d like to keep that position fresh. They’re doing well.”

On Pitt being a young team:

“Most of our guys have been playing the most minutes that they’ve ever played at this level. I don’t think we’re inexperienced. There are teams that think they are and they continue to stress the fact that they are inexperienced. For us, I think we’ll play as experienced as we went to be. It’s just a term and it doesn’t define you unless you allow it to.”

Quoting Pitt’s Lamar Patterson

On his play:

“I had some good open shots, so I took them. I just wanted to step up for my team and bring energy to the floor.  We just need to continue to rebound better, play better defense and continue to improve for every game.”

Quoting Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs

On Pitt’s offense:

“Coach Dixon is a defensive minded coach, so we use our defense to feed our offense so we know any combination can work. We grabbed some long rebounds and looked for open shots because of great ball movement and penetration.”

Quoting Head Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Jeff Neubauer

Opening Statement:

“First of all, we’ve been a part of big wins or been very close to winning big games and the thing that has helped us to do that was our shooting. I was pleased tonight with our shooting, but it wasn’t great. I thought that we played great man-to-man defense which allowed us to stay in the game. To win a game like that though, we have to shoot the ball better. We didn’t make our free throws. Overall, I was proud of our team for their effort.”

On Pitt playing with a smaller lineup and creating matchup problems:

“I think that I put some combinations out there that just didn’t work. I take the blame for that. Pitt plays great defense though. That’s why they are so dominant. Jamie Dixon is a great defensive coach.”

Quoting Eastern Kentucky’s Josh Taylor

On being from Pittsburgh and playing Pitt:

“Obviously for me, it was exciting to get to come home to play. We have to come out and shoot the ball better. I thought that our defense was good, but we have to play harder.”

Quoting Eastern Kentucky’s Justin Stommes

“We always come into games expecting to win. When we got it down to nine points, things were really clicking for us. At that point we felt like we had a good chance to win the game.”
