Pitt vs. Texas, November 24, 2009

O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic Championship, Kansas City, Mo.

 

*Pitt dropped a 78-62 loss to No. 3 ranked Texas in the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic Championship Game. Pitt drops to 4-1 on the year.

 

*Pitt junior center Gary McGhee was named to the CBE Classic All-Tournament team. He was joined by Iowa’s Cully Payne, Wichita State’s Toure’ Murry and Texas’ Damion James and Dexter Pittman. James was named the CBE Classic Tournament Most Valuable Player.

 


 

 

*No. 3 Texas represented Pitt’s highest ranked November opponent since the Panthers played No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 29, 1994.

 

*Pitt drops to 2-3 all-time vs. top-5 ranked opponents in November. The four other games include a 85-67 win over No. 4 ranked Kentucky on Nov. 22, 1991, a 90-67 loss to No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 29, 1994, a 68-56 win over No. 4 ranked Kentucky on Nov. 27, 1998 in the Puerto Rico Shootout and an 87-52 loss to No. 5 Maryland on Nov. 28, 1998 in the Puerto Rico Shootout.

 

*The loss dropped Pitt to 11-10 all-time against top-5 nationally ranked teams since the 1996 season. Pitt also dropped to 15-47 all-time vs. top-5 nationally ranked teams.

 

*Pitt’s 16-point loss to Texas marked only the 12th time in Jamie Dixon’s 213 career games and only 46 losses that the Panthers dropped a game by more than 10 points. It marked the third largest margin of loss for the Panthers during the last seven seasons. Dixon’s career record is 167-46. Of his 46 losses, Dixon has lost 19 of those games by four points or less.

 

*Pitt dropped to 1-1 all-time vs. Texas. In the two team’s last meeting, Pitt claimed a 91-87 victory over the Longhorns on November 29, 1991 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

 

*Pitt’s consecutive game November win streak was snapped at 38 games. The streak began on November 25, 2001.

 

*Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon dropped his first-ever November contest. He drops to 35-1 in the month of November. Combining his November and December records, Dixon now owns a 74-4 all-time record in his seven years as head coach. He is a combined 77-5 vs. non-conference opponents.

 

*Pitt dropped to 21-9in neutral site contests over the last five seasons.

 

*Pitt has now won 53 of its last 57 games against non-conference opponents.

 

*Pitt yielded 78 points to Texas on the evening. Since Jamie Dixon became head coach, Pitt has held 169 of its 213 opponents to 70 points or less. Pitt’s record is 167-46 during that span.

 

*Texas became the first team this season to score 60 or more points against the Panthers. Pitt held its first four opponents to 60 points or less on the year. Over the last nine years, Pitt has held 139 opponents to 60 points or less. Pitt is 135-4 in those games including a 4-0 record this year and 12-0 record in 2008-09.

 

*For the fifth consecutive game, Pitt played without its two most experienced players: senior Jermaine Dixon (fractured right foot) and junior Gilbert Brown (academic suspension).

 

*Center Gary McGhee registered his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds on the evening. The 11 points and 10 rebounds both were new career-highs for McGhee. He reached double figure scoring in each of the last two games and averaged 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds at the CBE Classic.

 

*With his team-leading 13 points, Brad Wanamaker reached double figure scoring for the eighth time in his career.
