POST-GAME QUOTESHEET

Youngstown State at Pitt, November 28, 2009, Petersen Events Center

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon

Opening Statement:

“We’ve been focusing on rebounding for the past couple weeks and I thought that today was a good example of us improving on that. We outrebounded Youngstown State by 16, and they’re a solid rebounding team. They are a bunch of experienced players. I think we’re headed in the right direction. Gary McGhee continues to get better and I thought that Brad Wannamaker had his best game of the year so far. We keep getting better as the game goes on. There are some things that we can be doing better, but that is what’s expected at this time of the year.”

On Ashton Gibbs’ shooting:

“Ashton came out and only made two shots in the first half and then he got some better looks as the game went on. I think players have their streaks of knocking down shots and missing shots as well. The thing we’re having Ashton focus on is shot selection and I think players tend to miss shots due to their choice to shoot the ball.”

On Pitt’s 17 turnovers:

“When we turned the ball over today, I thought we had the ball in the right spot, we just made poor decisions. We had 10 in the first half and we then cut it to seven in the second. It’s a little disappointing, but it’s good that we continued to improve as the game went on, rather than getting worse.”

Quoting Pitt’s Brad Wannamaker

On playing after a loss:

“I thought we played pretty well. We came out and got the win. We could have played better. I don’t think we take a lot of pride in the way we play defense. Once we do that, I think it will be easier for us to win games.”

Quoting Pitt’s Gary McGee

On rebounding:

“Coach Dixon is constantly stressing rebounding, so I came out aggressive and grabbed some offensive and defensive rebounds. That’s the key to our game. When you crash the boards, you get the rebounds.”

Quoting Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs

On Youngstown State’s defense:

“They did a good job in the first half of closing me out. I had a few bad turnovers and I made some mistakes. That’s a credit to their defense. But I was able to make some adjustments and take what their defense gave me and from there I knocked down a few open looks. Whenever I’m open, I’m going to do my best to make the shot.”

Quoting Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum

Opening Statement:

“I thought we played well for 30 minutes. The last 10 minutes, we missed some free throws and some easy shots around the basket. I thought that Pitt imposed their will on the glass. They did a great job of rebounding, especially on the offensive end. The last 10 minutes was the difference in this game.”

On playing well in the first half, but not being able to finish out the game:

“We executed well in the first half, but our execution in the second half was discouraging. Obviously, we are disappointed that we didn’t play well enough to win. Pitt is a great program, with a great tradition.”
