Pitt vs. Delaware State, December 8, 2010

Pitt 70, Delaware State 42

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon

Opening Statement:

“It was a good win and a solid performance for us. We came and did what we had to do against a team that was going to make us be patient and let them run their system and rely on some penetration from their guards. For the most part we did all the things we wanted to do against a team that is going to win some games in their conference. I anticipate that Delaware State is going to win their league and make it to the NCAA Tournament. They’re a well coached team. I thought we did some things well, such as rebounding, defending and taking care of the ball. Those were some points that we’ve been emphasizing the past few weeks and we’ve been able to take care of them. It’s been a good stretch of games for us.”

On Dante Taylor:

“He’s getting better. He’s working hard in practice and he plays hard and he really cares. I think that’s a big step towards a players’ ability to improve. A lot of guys are making that step, but he’s doing a great job of understanding of what we’re trying to do and he brings a great energy, intensity and physicality for us.”

On his play:

“He was around the ball, he came up with some finishes around the basket and making free throws. He had a great freshman year and he’s improved. He’s a great kid and he’s an unselfish player. He played 15 minutes tonight and he was at the end of the bench cheering for his teammates. He’s a great teammate.”

On Dante Taylor’s double-double:

“I think he feels more comfortable out there. I don’t think that the stats matter to him, because he does those things in practice. But, he’s showed improvement. His freshman year was a great starting base for him and he’s building off of that.”

On his confidence:

“It was a good win for us. I just have to get ready to play Tennessee on Saturday. I’m feeling more comfortable out there and my confidence is solid. I just have to keep working hard and playing my game.”

On his defense:

“Coach Dixon stresses defense and I just want to do it. I want my team and my coaches to build trust in me so I can keep my minuets up.”

On defense compared to high school:

“This is the next level. Offense is secondary to defense because that’s what wins games for your team. In college, it’s the most important thing and that’s what I’m trying to work on. The guys that come off the bench, we talk about getting in the game and contributing right away, whether it’s making a pass, grabbing a rebound, or getting a stop. Coach emphasizes those things and the scoring will come for us.”

Quoting Delaware State Head Coach Greg Jackson

Opening Statement:

“We played probably one of the better teams we’ll play all year long. This team is undoubtedly as good as advertised. We’ll play a lot of good teams along the way like South Carolina and La Salle and we’ve been in most of these ball games. They’re extremely well coached and they are strong in so many different areas. They did an outstanding job of taking us away from the things that we try to do.”

On his thoughts on his team’s play:

“I thought we gave a good effort. We wanted to make sure we stay inside the confines of our system against a team as big as they are inside, and that they are the number three team in the country, and I was pleased by how we stayed within that. We’ll probably win our conference if we continue to play the way we’ve been playing to this point. But our kids competed.”

On Pitt’s all-around talent:

“They’re as good as advertised. I think the difference between their team and most of the teams we’ve played to this point is that they’re extremely well coached. They’re so talented at every position on the floor and they can hurt you in so many different ways it’s hard to just limit them or take anything away from them because they can beat you from the outside, they can go inside and beat you, they can beat you in the transition game. That’s why they cause so many problems for you. Any time you try to shorten the length of the game or slow them down they can beat you in so many areas.”

On Pitt’s potential:

“From top to bottom, coaching wise, across the board they are head and shoulders better than anybody we’ll play. If they continue to improve and play the way they’re playing I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team go into the final four. We play some tough teams, we have a very, very demanding schedule and this team is, again, as good as advertised.”
