Sam Young Named a Finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

Feb. 5, 2009

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh senior forward Sam Young was named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award honors the one senior basketball player who displays numerous accomplishments across four specific areas: classroom, community, character and competition.

The announcement launches a nationwide balloting process to determine the 2009 award winner. Lowe’s will announce and present the men’s basketball winner in front of a national television audience during the CBS telecast of the NCAA Final Four in Detroit. The 10 finalists will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote beginning today and concluding on March 22. Votes from coaches and media will be coupled with fan voting to determine the award recipient. Fans can vote online at www.seniorclassaward.com.

This season Young is averaging 18.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He is converting 48.0 percent (153-319) of his field goal attempts and 33.7 percent (30-89) of his 3-point attempts. He leads the Panthers in scoring, field goals made, 3-point field goals made and blocked shots. Young has scored over 20 points in nine games and has reached double figure scoring in 20 of Pitt’s 22 games this year. In his four-year 129-game career, Young has scored 1,593 points, grabbed 610 rebounds and blocked 97 shots.

A midseason All-America Second Team selection by Collegehoop.net, Young is a Wooden Award and Naismith Award All-America nominee. Young was honored as the Big East Player of the Week on Jan. 26 after averaging 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and shooting 61.5 percent from the floor in leading Pitt to two wins over No. 8 Syracuse and West Virginia.

No. 6 ranked Pitt (20-2, 7-2 Big East) is back in action at DePaul on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT at Allstate Arena in Chicago. The contest will be televised by ESPN Regional and broadcast locally on FSN Pittsburgh.
