PITTSBURGH—In an attempt to promote heart health awareness on campus, in honor of Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon’s late sister Maggie Dixon and to recognize the month of February as American Heart Month, the Oakland Zoo student organization announced Wednesday that Pitt students will wear red leis at Friday’s men’s basketball game against West Virginia.

Prior to tipoff, leis will be passed out to all students in attendance. Individuals will also receive facts and figures on how heart issues affect young adults and information on how and where to get tested for heart disease. According to studies, individuals between the ages of 18-25 are the most at-risk segment for congenital heart conditions.

In addition, Dixon and the Pitt coaching staff will display red lapel pins during the game.

Pitt held its first-ever Basketball Fan Fest and Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair at the Petersen Events Center in October. The event highlighted the Pitt men’s and women’s basketball teams and promoted heart health awareness as fans were afforded the opportunity to learn CPR and AED techniques, receive free health screenings and access educational heart health displays.

Maggie Dixon was the vibrant, passionate and successful head coach of the Army Black Knights women’s basketball team. In 2006, she guided her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Just weeks later, Maggie died suddenly due to an arrhythmia. She was only 28 years old. The Maggie Dixon Women’s Basketball Classic and accompanying Heart Health Fair held at New York’s Madison Square Garden has become the nation’s premier women’s college basketball event. This year, more than 9,000 fans attended the women’s basketball doubleheader held on December 13.

No. 25 Pitt hosts No. 5 West Virginia on Friday at 9 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN with Dave Pasch, Doris Burke and Allen Hopkins (sidelines) making the call.
