Pitt Enters NCAA Tournament as No. 3 Seed in Milwaukee, Wis.

PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team will enter the 2010 NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis. to play No. 14 seed Oakland in a First Round matchup on Friday, March 19. An at-large selection, Pitt (24-8, 13-5 Big East) meets No. 14 seed and 2010 Summit League Champion Oakland (26-8, 17-1 Summit League) on Friday, March 19 at the Bradley Center. Tipoff is at 2:55 p.m. ET/1:55 CT or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Xavier-Minnesota game. All games will be televised nationally on CBS.

 

The Pitt-Oakland winner will advance to the NCAA Second Round to face the winner of No. 6 seeded Xavier (24-8) and No. 11 seed Minnesota (21-13). That contest is scheduled for Sunday, March 21. Game time is TBA. Sunday's winner advances to the West Regional and NCAA Sweet Sixteen competition. Those contests are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, March 25 and 27 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

Pitt (24-8, 13-5 Big East) is making a school-record ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance after earning berths in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and now 2010. Prior to that run, Pitt appeared in three straight NCAA Tournaments in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Since 2002, Pitt is one of only five schools nationwide to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen at least five times over the last eight years (Duke-6, Kansas-6, Texas-5, Pitt-5, Connecticut-5). Additionally, Jamie Dixon has guided Pitt to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his first seven seasons as head coach. He is the first coach in school history to guide Pitt to seven straight NCAA Tournaments.

 

Pitt is one of only seven programs nationally to advance to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last nine seasons. Those schools include: Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, Pitt, Texas and Wisconsin.

 

Pitt, which has won 13 of its last 21 NCAA Tournament games, is making its 22nd all-time NCAA Tournament appearance. Pitt is 21-22 all time in 43 NCAA Tournament games.

PITT'S 2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES

 

*Pitt advances to the NCAA Tournament for a school record ninth consecutive year.

 

*Pitt is making the school's 22nd all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, a school-record seventh straight year under Head Coach Jamie Dixon.

 

*Pitt has advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen in five of the last eight seasons: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2009. Only two programs (Duke-6 and Kansas-6) have bested that record and two others have matched it (Texas-5 and Connecticut-5).

*Pitt is one of only seven programs nationally to advance to each of the last nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Those programs include Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, Pitt, Texas and Wisconsin.

 

*Pitt is one of only three programs nationwide to advance to the NCAA Tournament, win 20 overall games and 10 league games in each of the last nine seasons. Those programs include Gonzaga, Kansas and Pitt.

 

*In its 21 NCAA Tournament appearances and 43 games, Pitt owns a 21-22 all-time record in the tourney. It is 11-8 in its last 19 games. As Pitt's head coach, Jamie Dixon owns a 9-6 NCAA Tournament record in his previous six appearances.

 

*Pitt enters the NCAA Tournament with a No. 3 overall record and 13-5 Big East record. Pitt won 20-plus games for a school record ninth straight season and 17th time in school history. Pitt also won 10-plus Big East games for a school record ninth straight season.

 

*Pitt is the only Big East school to surpass the 20-win and 10-win Big East regular season totals in each of the last nine seasons. Pitt currently owns the league's top records for league play (109-41) and overall games (244-64) over the last nine years.
