Quoting Head Coach Jamie Dixon

Opening Statement:

“We’re just trying to gather as much information as possible about East Tennessee State. We know the Atlantic Sun conference a little bit. There’s a lot of good basketball in that league, so we’ll watch film right now and get some information on them.  We went pretty hard in practice today, we went after it. Levance Fields wasn’t able to go today because of his groin.  It’s been really bothersome to him and we’re trying to figure it out.”

On the East bracket:

“It doesn’t really matter what I think, it is what it is and everyone has to be ready to play a good team.  I haven’t really looked at our bracket too much, but we’re going to have to play our best basketball. We have to focus on the task at hand, and that is to take care of East Tennessee State. The whole bracket isn’t really a priority right now.”

On being the No. 1 seed in the East:

“It’s a great thing, but it doesn’t really mean anything at this point. It’s an accomplishment.  We have to play good basketball for a long period of time, but at the same time, there are 65 teams all thinking that they can win the National Championship. We got what we needed from it, it’s done, and now we look past to other things.”

On the Big East sending seven teams:

“It’s the right number. We were hoping that maybe eight teams could make it in, but it happened that there were so many good teams with high seeds, meaning that other teams in our conference are losing and there are only get so many teams that could get in. You can’t have both high seeds and more than seven teams in the tournament. That’s the way it works, we beat each other up and the Big East has three number one seeds in the tournament.  That’s the story.”

On three Big East teams being No. 1 seeds:

“I don’t know if it’s ever been done before, but there’s always talk about how good a conference could be at the beginning of the season and usually it doesn’t live up to it, but the Big East lived up to it this time. Louisville, Connecticut, and Pitt all being number one seeds indicated how good this conference is.”

On making school history by being a No. 1 seed:

“It feels good. We get to play in close to home. It’s what we’ve worked for all year, but we’re not satisfied with it.  There’s still a lot of work that we need to do.  I think we got the toughest bracket, but it’s really not a problem to us. We expected that.”

On Pitt’s play:

“Offensively, we need to score, but everyone’s feeling pretty good.  This is where we wanted to play so I’m sure we’re going to show up for the game.  Mostly for us, it’s just defense. Since Coach Dixon, we’ve been a defensive team.  Defensively, we’re doing well, but we need to step it up.”

On having three No. 1 seeds from the Big East Conference:

“It shows how powerful our conference is. I think we have the toughest bracket and it’s not going to be easy for us but we’re ready. When we lost to West Virginia, we weren’t sure if we were going to get the No. 1 seed.  We kind of expected it but we weren’t really sure. We left the (WVU) game in New York.  Once we got out of there, it was over.”

On the loss to West Virginia:

“It’s behind us now.  I wish we would have won the game and tried to play for another Big East Championship, but it’s behind us now, and we’re looking forward to making a run at the Final Four.”

Quoting Pitt’s DeJuan Blair

On receiving the No. 1 seed:

“Nothing has been accomplished yet.  I’d like to congratulate my teammates and my coaches first of all and thank God for letting us have the No. 1 spot. We have a long way to go; this is going to be a long March and we’re going to have fun.”

On playing East Tennessee State:

“They’re obviously a good team, they made the tournament and I’d like to congratulate them for that.”

On having three No. 1 seeds from the Big East in the NCAA Tournament:

“I feel like we’re the No. 3 seed since we are the third No. 1 and we’re just going to keep playing as a team and I guarantee you’re going to see a whole different Pitt team. That’s the Big East for you.  It’s a tough conference and we’ve got to get it done. Congratulations to the whole Big East.

Quoting Pitt’s Tyrell Biggs:

“It means a lot to have the first No. 1 seed ever; we made history. We have a lot of expectations for us so we just have to come in a work. That says a lot. We have the best conference this year, and in Big East history too.”
