ACC SCHEDULE BULLET POINTS IN 2014-15
A former Big East foe, Pitt has won each of the last seven matchups against Boston College, including a victory in Chestnut Hill last season. Pitt is 30-17 all-time vs. Boston College, including a 13-5 record in home games. Former Pitt assistant coach Jim Christian (1996-99) is the new head coach at Boston College. Jamie Dixon is a perfect 4-0 vs. BC.
Pitt owns a 3-0 all-time record against Clemson, including a sweep of the two games last season. Josh Newkirk’s buzzer beating jumper at the end of regulation fueled Pitt’s 83-78 overtime victory at Clemson last year.
Through the years, many of Pitt’s all-time great basketball performances have come against Duke. Don Hennon scored a school-best 45 points in a victory over Duke on Dec. 21, 1957. Sam Clancy converted a layup with two seconds to go to give Pitt a 71-69 upset win over Duke on Feb. 10, 1979. Levance Fields’ stepback 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in overtime helped defeat Duke 65-64 on Dec. 20, 2007. Last season, Pitt hosted Duke for the first time in 34 years before a Petersen Events Center record crowd of 12,944. This year, Pitt visits Duke for the first time in 35 years and since Feb. 10, 1979.
Pitt owns a 9-2 all-time record vs. the Seminoles, including wins in five of the last six meetings between the two programs. Jamie Dixon is 3-1 vs. Florida State.
Georgia Tech visits Pitt for the first time in 45 years and since Feb. 9, 1970. In the first meeting between the two schools in 25 years, Pitt claimed an 81-74 win at Georgia Tech last year in Atlanta.
Former Big East rival Louisville begins its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014-15. 2013 national champion Louisville and Pitt have played 13 all-time matchups. The Panthers claimed three consecutive Big East Tournament games at Madison Square Garden against the Cardinals from 2006-08.
Even though Pitt and Miami were fellow Big East Conference members from 1992-2004, Miami has never visited the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers have claimed the last three last consecutive meetings and five of the last six against the Hurricanes. Last season in a February win at Miami, Lamar Patterson set a school record for most points scored in a one overtime game (10).
In Pitt’s first-ever ACC Tournament, the Panthers defeated No. 15 North Carolina 80-75 before a pro-Tar Heel crowd in Greensboro. Pitt’s Talib Zanna scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds in the victory. Pitt’s victory was its first over North Carolina in 73 years. North Carolina visits Pitt for the first time in Dec. 20, 1995.
North Carolina State
In its inaugural season in the ACC, Pitt split its two-game series against North Carolina State. The two schools have played several historically significant games, including two 1974 matchups at NCSU’s Reynolds Coliseum.
Pitt claimed a thrilling 85-81 win at Notre Dame last season. In an exciting rivalry dating back to Feb. 19, 1927, the former Big East rivals have met 59 times with Pitt winning 28 games. Pitt is 5-2 vs. Notre Dame at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt played its 200th all-time game at the Petersen Events Center against Notre Dame on Feb. 18, 2013.
Pitt has had recent success against Syracuse, winning 14 of the last 21 total matchups between the two schools. The Panthers are 6-2 vs. Syracuse at the Petersen Events Center and 5-2 vs. Syracuse at the Carrier Dome since the 2003-04 season. Jamie Dixon is 10-6 all-time vs. Syracuse.
Pitt will face defending ACC regular season and tournament champion Virginia in Charlottesville for the first time since January 21, 1976. The two squads met twice last season for the first time in 24 years. Both games were decided by three points apiece and proved to be low-scoring affairs with point totals in the 50s.
Pitt has claimed each of the last five meetings against former Big East foe Virginia Tech. Former Marquette coach Buzz Williams begins his first season in Blacksburg. Jamie Dixon is 3-0 all-time vs. Virginia Tech.
In 2014-15, Pitt will play at Wake Forest for the first time in series history. In its first-ever ACC Tournament game, Pitt registered its all-time largest league tournament victory, a 29-point win (84-55) over Wake Forest in the second round. Former Kansas All-American Danny Manning is the new coach at Wake Forest.
