ESPN College GameDay Will Visit Pitt Basketball in January, 2012

Aug. 11, 2011

PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh will host the popular ESPN College GameDay television show at the Petersen Events Center on Saturday, January 21 prior to its scheduled Louisville game, officials at ESPN announced Thursday.

Pitt will showcase the telecast for the second time since the show was launched seven years ago in 2005. Previously, Pitt hosted the show at the Petersen Events Center on January 13, 2007, prior to a 74-69 win over Georgetown. Over 3,000 members of the Oakland Zoo and general public attended the morning broadcast.

ESPN College GameDay is hosted by Rece Davis, along with analysts Jay Bilas, Hubert Davis, Digger Phelps and Bob Knight. Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale and Erin Andrews normally announce the game broadcast. ESPN College GameDay is typically televised live twice, both for two hours from 10 a.m.-noon ET and pregame from 8-9 p.m. ET, respectively.

Overall, Pitt has participated in four previous ESPN College GameDay broadcasts and owns a 3-1 record in those appearances. The Panthers were part of the first-ever ESPN College GameDay production on January 22, 2005 at Connecticut. The Panthers defeated UConn, 76-66. Pitt also has played in ESPN College GameDay telecasts at Marquette (March 3, 2007) and at Villanova (February 12, 2011).

The Big East has enjoyed a major presence on ESPN College GameDay as the conference leads the nation in total program appearances (30) and total days hosted (14). The Big East is guaranteed two appearances this year, the most for any conference. Pitt's five showings rank tied for second among Big East programs: 6-Louisville, 5-Pitt, 5-Connecticut, 4-Syracuse, 2-Notre Dame, 2-Georgetown. Pitt is one of only 19 schools nationwide to host the telecast for both football and basketball.

Over the last 10 seasons, Pitt Basketball has appeared on television an average of 28.0 times per season. Included in that figure are 161 national TV games (ESPN-73, ESPN2-27, CBS-37, ABC-4) and 119 regional/local games.

Pitt is one of six different venues that ESPN GameDay will visit during the 2011-12 basketball season. In addition to Pitt, the show will make visits to Florida State (Jan. 14), Arizona (Jan. 28), Missouri (Feb. 4), Vanderbilt (Feb. 11), Michigan (Feb. 18), Connecticut (Feb. 25) and either Duke or Kansas (March 3).
