SHENZHEN, China—Pitt guard Ashton Gibbs scored eight points, including a game-high two 3-point field goals to help the USA Men’s Team claim a 94-84 win over Israel Thursday at Universiade Main Gym. Undefeated in the World University Games with a 5-0 record, Gibbs and Team USA will play Lithuania (4-1) in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.

Gibbs, who came off the bench against Israel, converted 2-4 3-point field goals and played a team-high 22 minutes. Alabama’s JaMychal Green led the Americans in scoring for the second-straight game with 16 points.

Israel (2-3) led Team USA 43-41 at halftime. It was the first time the Americans trailed at a quarter break during the tournament. USA forged ahead in the third quarter by outscoring Israel 29-19. The Americans used a plus-10 rebound margin (43-34) to key their 10 point win.

If Team USA defeats Lithuania, it will advance to semifinal play against the Canada (3-1)-Romania (3-2) winner on Aug. 21. The Gold Medal game is scheduled for Aug. 22.
