PITTSBURGH--Pitt's final season in the Big East Conference will feature home games against Connecticut, Syracuse, Notre Dame and Villanova as the University of Pittsburgh released its entire 31-game 2012-13 men's basketball schedule on Wednesday. Pitt is slated to play 15 potential games on national television. Additional national, ESPN Regional/Big East Network and local television games will be announced at a later date.
Overall, the Panthers could potentially face 16 opponents who advanced to postseason play in 2011-12, including 14 contests against schools advancing to last season's NCAA Tournament.
For the sixth consecutive year, Pitt will play an 18-game Big East regular season schedule and will face each of the 14 possible league opponents at least once. Pitt will play nine home games, nine away contests and play four of those schools two times apiece (Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette and Villanova).
Home opponents at the Petersen Events Center will include Cincinnati (Dec. 31), Connecticut (Jan. 19), DePaul (Jan. 26), Marquette (Jan. 12), Notre Dame (Feb. 18), Seton Hall (Feb. 4), South Florida (Feb. 27), Syracuse (Feb. 2) and Villanova (March 3).
The Panthers' 2012-13 road opponents are Cincinnati (Feb. 9) in a potential ESPN College GameDay broadcast, DePaul (March 9), Georgetown (Jan. 8), Louisville (Jan. 28), Marquette (Feb. 16), Providence (Jan. 22), Rutgers (Jan. 5), St. John's (Feb. 24) and Villanova (Jan. 16).
The Big East Championship is scheduled for March 12-16 at Madison Square Garden. The 2013 NCAA Tournament begins the week of March 18.
Highlighting Pitt's non-conference schedule are two potential Thanksgiving contests in the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden (Nov. 21 and 23) against two of three host schools: Michigan, Virginia or Kansas State. Both of those games would be played on national television. In order to advance to the Preseason NIT Finals in New York, Pitt must win two preliminary home games which are scheduled for November 12 and 13 at the Petersen Events Center. Potential opponents and game times have yet to be released. Should Pitt not advance to the Preseason NIT Semifinals in New York, it would host two more Preseason NIT games at the Petersen Events Center on both Nov. 19 and Nov. 20. The Panthers will compete in the Preseason NIT for the first time since the 1991-92 season.
The annual City Game against Duquesne is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Consol Energy Center. Tickets for the Duquesne game will be sold through Ticketmaster. Panther Club members and season ticketholders received an e-mail detailing the presale times and codes.
Pitt will play 10 non-conference home games and open its regular season at the Petersen Events Center against Mount St. Mary's on Friday, Nov. 9. The Panthers' home schedule also includes the two Preseason NIT games (Nov. 12 and Nov. 13), Oakland (Nov. 17), Howard (Nov. 27), 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Detroit (Dec. 1), North Florida (Dec. 8), Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 15), Delaware State (Dec. 19) and Kennesaw State (Dec. 23). Additionally, Pitt will host exhibition games against both Indiana, Pa. (Oct. 26) and Hawaii-Hilo (Nov. 2).
Pitt's first basketball event of the year is an outdoor Midnight Madness on Friday, Oct. 12 at 9:45 p.m. Immediately following a fireworks and laser show and held in conjunction with Homecoming activities at the Cathedral of Learning, Midnight Madness will feature the Pitt men's and women's teams along with several contests and promotional activities. Admission is free and open to the public. The Panthers will also a host their annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage, Fan Fest and Maggie Dixon Heart Heath Fair. Those events will be announced at a later date.
The Petersen Events Center has been sold out on a season basis for 10 consecutive years and the season ticket waiting list is at nearly 11,000 members. For information on joining the season ticket waiting list and for single game ticket notifications, please contact the University of Pittsburgh Ticket Office at (800) 643-PITT or (412) 648-PITT.
Pitt returns three starters, seven of its top nine scorers and seven of its top nine letterwinners. In addition, the Panthers welcome a top-10 ranked recruiting class.
