Pitt Holds Second Annual Fan Fest and Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair

Sept. 25, 2010

PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh hosted its second annual Basketball Fan Fest and Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Petersen Events Center.

The event highlighted the Pitt men's and women's basketball teams and featured various fan-oriented events including a behind-the-scenes tour of the Pitt basketball facilities and family activities throughout the Petersen Events Center. Pitt Men's Coach Jamie Dixon and Women's Coach Agnus Berenato, along with student-athletes from both teams conducted an interactive "Chalk Talk" and student-athletes interacted with fans in various basketball-oriented activities on the Petersen Events Center arena floor.

Held in honor of the late Maggie Dixon, Jamie's sister, the Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair was also conducted in the Petersen Events Center. Individuals had the opportunity to acquire free blood pressure screenings and help set the Guiness World Record for most blood pressure screenings in an eight-hour period. Additionally, attendees were afforded the opportunity to receive free health screenings, learn about CPR and AED training, access educational heart health displays and participate in basketball activities on the main Petersen Events Center court.

In affiliation with the Maggie Dixon Foundation and UPMC Cardiovascular Institute, the event's objective was to increase awareness of the risk of sudden cardiac death and the need for early diagnoses and preventive treatment. The Maggie Dixon Foundation is a national non-profit organization with the mission to prevent sudden cardiac death due to acquired and inherited heart disorders in children, adolescents and adults.

The Pitt men's team is coming off a 2009-10 season that saw it accumulate a 25-9 record, finish in second place in the Big East (13-5), advance to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive season and earn a No. 3 seed upon entering the NCAA Tourney. The Pitt women's team is coming off its fifth consecutive postseason appearance in 2009-10.

Pitt has scheduled its annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage for Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. At this event, fans will get their first glimpse of the 2010-11 Pitt men's basketball team.
