PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Basketball program will host its annual Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair/Fan Fest and Blue-Gold Scrimmage on Sunday, Oct. 6 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center. Admission is free and open to the public for the event which concludes with its annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage beginning at 3 p.m. Free parking is available in the OC Lot.
The Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair and Fan Fest will begin at 1 p.m. and include free blood pressure health screenings and educational heart health displays, while fans will also have the opportunity to obtain autographs from the Pitt men’s and women’s players and coaches from 1-2 p.m. Fans will then have the opportunity to watch the first of two scheduled Blue-Gold Men’s Scrimmages this fall beginning at 3 p.m.
The fifth annual Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair is held in the honor of the late Maggie Dixon, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon’s younger sister, who was the vibrant, passionate and successful head coach of the Army Black Knights women’s basketball team. In 2006, she guided her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Just weeks later, Maggie died suddenly due to a heart arrhythmia. She was only 28 years old.
In addition, the Oakland Zoo will conduct its second annual 3v3 tournament at the Petersen Events Center beginning at 10 a.m. All proceeds for the tournament will benefit the local Big Brothers Big Sisters Club of Greater Pittsburgh.
The Pitt basketball team began its NCAA mandated practices on Friday, Sept. 27. Pitt returns three starters and two of its top three scorers from a team that finished 24-9 overall and advanced to its 11th NCAA Tournament in the last 12 seasons.
