PITTSBURGH--For the second consecutive year, Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon and the men's basketball team hosted a dinner to thank several of its loyal season ticketholders Wednesday evening at the Petersen Events Center Campus View Club.
Twenty-five season ticketholders were selected randomly to attend the hour-long dinner with the 2012-13 Pitt Basketball team and coaching staff. Those in attendance had the unique opportunity to meet and converse with each men's basketball player and coaching staff member. Dixon spoke about each student-athlete to the attendees while Pitt players presented season ticket packages to those in attendance.
Pitt basketball fans have played a key role in the program's success. Pitt owns a 164-19 overall record (.896 winning percentage) and 69-16 Big East slate (.812 winning percentage) in the Petersen Events Center. Entering its 11th season in the arena, all 179 regular season games have been sold out. Furthermore, Pitt has a season ticket waiting list of over 11,000 names. Pitt currently has sold out 186 consecutive home games dating back to a January 12, 2002 Fitzgerald Field House contest against Notre Dame.
"This dinner was (Athletic Director) Steve Pederson's idea," Dixon said. "It's all about doing something special for our fans. It was just random fans, not ones with front row seats, but fans that have supported us from the opening of the Petersen Events Center. We wanted to thank them in a small way for all of their support. It takes great fans to build a great program. The Petersen Events Center is always one of the toughest places to play, we're sold out for the 11th consecutive season, we have 11,000 fans on a season ticket waiting list. We have a unique situation here at Pitt. It's not like this anywhere else."
"We have all of these great fans who attend our games, yet, sometimes they don't actually get to meet and see the players in person that they are so supportive of," Pitt Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. "The Oakland Zoo is made up of students, so they get a chance to interact with our players on a daily basis. Our goal with this event is to thank our loyal season ticketholders and to give all of these other people the opportunity to meet our student-athletes and coaches up close."
Pitt men's basketball season tickets are sold out. Fans may join the basketball season ticket waiting list by contacting the University of Pittsburgh Ticket Office at (800) 643-PITT or (412) 648-PITT or visiting www.pittsburghpanthers.com.
