Series: First-ever exhibition or regular season meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.

 

GAME NOTES

*Pitt plays its first exhibition game on Friday when it hosts NCAA Division II UC San Diego at the Petersen Events Center.


 

 

*The game was setup by former UC San Diego head coach and former Pitt Director of Operations Chris Carlson. Carlson, who is now the Associate Commissioner for Men's Basketball at the West Coast Conference, worked with Jamie Dixon at Pitt from 2001-03. Carlson was the head coach at UC San Diego until a few weeks ago.

*Friday's game on October 25 against UC San Diego is the earliest Pitt has ever had an exhibition game. Previously, October 26 was the earliest date set last year against Indiana, Pa.

*Pitt has won 28 consecutive exhibition games dating back to a 92-90 loss to Marathon Oil on November 3, 1999.

*Pitt is 52-5 all-time in exhibition games for a .912 winning percentage.

*Jamie Dixon owns a perfect 20-0 all-time record in exhibition games.

 

PITT ATTENDS FIRST-EVER ACC MEDIA DAY

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Pitt was selected by media members to finish sixth out of 15 schools at its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Operation Basketball preseason media day held on October 16 at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Charlotte. Over 300 writers, television broadcasters, radio producers and other assorted media members attended the ACC's 52nd annual event.

In a vote of the league's attending media members, Pitt finished sixth with 477 total points. Duke was selected to capture first place with 805 points and 50 first place votes, followed by No. 2 Syracuse (753 points/three first place votes), No. 3 North Carolina (668/one first place vote), No. 4 Virginia (612), No. 5 Notre Dame (608) and then Pitt. Syracuse's C.J. Fair was selected the preseason player of the year, while Duke's Jabari Parker was named preseason rookie of the year.

The preseason All-ACC team included Fair, Parker, Virginia's Joe Harris, Duke's Rodney Hood and Notre Dame's Jerian Grant. Fifty four media members participated in the voting.

In preparation for its inaugural season in the ACC, Pitt was making its first appearance at the event. Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon and seniors Lamar Patterson and Talib Zanna represented the Panthers in Charlotte.

The two-day event began with a coaches' reception on Tuesday night at the Ritz-Carlton and player dinner at BLT Steakhouse. On Wednesday, coaches and players went through interview sessions with national, regional and local writers, along with television and radio stations. The day also included a visit to ESPNU studios in Charlotte where Dixon was taped breaking down successful plays from the previous year and Zanna and Patterson were videoed on several items.
