Men's Basketball Ranked No. 10 in AP Preseason Poll

NEW YORK—The Pitt basketball team will open its 2011-12 season ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press preseason poll, the media organization announced on Friday. Associated Press poll voters consist of writers and broadcasters throughout the nation.

Pitt will also enter the year ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, which was released on Oct. 20.

For the sixth time in school history and fourth time in the last six years, Pitt will enter a season ranked among the nation’s top-10 in the Associated Press preseason poll. Pitt has now been ranked among the nation’s top-10 teams at least one week in each of the last 11 seasons (2002-11). Since January 7, 2002, Pitt has been ranked among the nation’s top-25 in 158 of the last 175 national polls.

North Carolina earned the nation’s No. 1 ranking, followed by No. 2 Kentucky, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Connecticut and No. 5 Syracuse. Rounding out the top-10 include No. 6 Duke, No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Louisville and No. 10 Pitt. With its No. 10 ranking and 1,027 total points, Pitt is one of six Big East programs ranked among the nation’s top-25 including No. 21 Cincinnati and No. 22 Marquette.
