Nov. 10, 2009
PITTSBURGH—Beginning with its first regular season game versus Wofford on Friday, Nov. 13, all Pitt men’s basketball games will be broadcast live on a network of 17 radio stations stretching across Pennsylvania and worldwide on www.pittsburghpanthers.com. Pittsburgh-based Clear Channel stations 94.5 3WS (WWWS-FM) and Fox Sports Radio 970 (WBGG-AM) will serve as flagship stations.
In his 41st consecutive year as “Voice of the Panthers,” Bill Hillgrove will handle play-by-play duties. Hillgrove’s informative and enthusiastic play-by-play descriptions have been a Panthers trademark since 1969. Joining Hillgrove courtside for his 31st season is color commentator Dick Groat. A Pittsburgh native and former college basketball great, Groat is one of the city’s most enduring sports legends, making his mark in both basketball and Major League Baseball (Pittsburgh Pirates).
Also joining both Hillgrove and Groat is former Pitt basketball star Curtis Aiken. Aiken played for Pitt from 1983-87 and currently ranks 23rd in school scoring history with 1,200 points. Aiken has served as a college basketball analyst for FSN Pittsburgh and as an analyst on Pitt internet broadcasts.
The Pitt ISP Sports Radio Network will sign on the air one half-hour before tipoff with the Geico Panthers 30-minute pre-game show, and will follow each contest with the Baierl Automotive 30-minute post-game show. Following the 30-minute post-game show, Fox Sports Radio 970 will air a 60-minute Panthers Hotline, where fans can call in to discuss the action.
Panthers fans will also enjoy additional programming including The Jamie Dixon Show. Sponsored by the University Club and hosted by Bill Hillgrove, The Jamie Dixon Radio Show will broadcast live on Fox Sports Radio 970. The show will air once per week in the evening starting in January, 2010. More details will be available at a later date.
