Men's Basketball Signs Four Student-Athletes to a National Letter of Intent

PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball program signed four student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Jamie Dixon announced on Tuesday. The NCAA Division I fall men's basketball signing period began Wednesday, Nov. 10 and concludes on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

 

Those four student-athletes include forward Jaylen Bond (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh H.S.), center Malcolm Gilbert (Smyrna, Del./The Academy of the New Church, Pa.), forward Durand Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Brewster Academy, N.H.) and guard John Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Life Center Academy, N.J.).

 

Pitt's 2011 class is rated among the nation's top-20 recruiting classes in several listings. It was ranked No. 18 in the MaxPreps.com website and garnered an honorable mention honor from Scout.com.

  

Jaylen Bond is a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward who has been described as physically strong and powerful around the basket. A First Team All-State selection, Bond guided Plymouth Whitemarsh to the Class 4A state title with a 30-2 overall record and No. 20 national ranking by USA Today. He has already scored over 1,000 career points and averaged 18.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a junior.

 

A 6-foot-11-inch, 230-pound center, Malcolm Gilbert will provide a defensive shot blocking and rebounding presence. Gilbert, who plays at The Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pa., is a consensus top-20 center and is ranked among the nation's top-150 players. He averaged 10 rebounds and 12 blocked shots per game as a sophomore.

 

A 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward, Durand Johnson is a superb shooter and scorer with NBA range and one of the top defenders in his class because of length, athleticism and competitiveness. Johnson averaged 15 points per game at Lake Clifton H.S. (Md.) while leading the Lakers to a 15-6 overall record and No. 10 state ranking. Johnson is playing the 2010-11 season at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.

 

John Johnson is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound combination guard who can get to the basket with quickness and owns superb playmaking abilities. A three-time First Team All-State player at Girard College H.S., Johnson averaged 22.2 points, 4.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as a junior last year. He guided Girard College to two straight Class A state titles as both a sophomore and freshman. A career 1,000-point scorer, Johnson will play his senior season at Life Center Academy in New Jersey.

 

No. 5 Pitt (3-0) is back in action on Thursday, Nov. 18 and Friday, Nov. 19 when it travels to New York City and Madison Square Garden for the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Pitt faces Maryland on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
