Guard, 6-1, 175, Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy
Josh Newkirk is a quick, strong and athletic player who is explosive going to the rim. Considered by many to be the top point guard in North Carolina in the Class of 2013, he possesses the ability to beat his defender off the dribble and get to the basket and can play both guard positions. Quick and athletic, Newkirk's strengths include his ability to beat his man off the dribble and finish above the rim, his great feel for the game and easily transitions from a playmaker to a scorer. He owns a presence at his position and has a headstrong game that coaches want out of a playmaker. Newkirk uses his quickness to get into the lane at will with a tremendous crossover dribble. His ball handling and passing are solid, he doesn't try to force things and he can hit the open jumper off the catch or dribble with range to the arc. He is also a good defender who plays with energy, pressures the ball and anticipates in the passing lanes. Once he limits his turnovers and consistently knocks down jump shots, he can be a tough player to guard.
