PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball program signed two student-athletes--Josh Newkirk (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy) and Michael Young (McKeesport, Pa./St. Benedict's Prep/Hudson Catholic)--to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Jamie Dixon announced on Saturday. The NCAA Division I fall men's basketball signing period began Wednesday, Nov. 14 and concludes on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Newkirk, a 6-foot-1-inch, 175-pound guard, enters his senior season at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C. Considered by many to be the top North Carolina high school point guard in his class, Newkirk averaged 15.2 points per game in leading the Holy Rams to an 18-6 overall record as a junior in 2011-12. Quick and explosive off the dribble, he can play both guard positions. Newkirk is also Pitt's first basketball signee from the Atlantic Coast Conference region.

A 6-foot-8-inch, 225-pound forward, Young enters his senior basketball season at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J. A native of Pittsburgh suburb McKeesport, Young is a consensus top-100 player in the national recruiting rankings. Young was named an All-Hudson County First Team selection after averaging 15.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, 1.8 blocks per game after leading Hudson Catholic H.S. to a 25-3 overall and 13-0 league record last year as a junior. He also ranked among state leaders in both rebounding (11.6 rpg.) and field goal percentage (72.8 percent, 164-225) and registered double-doubles in 23 of 28 games on the year. He transfers back to St. Benedict's Prep, where he spent his sophomore year. Young played his freshman season at Shadyside Academy in Pittsburgh.

Following Pitt's game against Oakland on Saturday at the Petersen Events Center, the Panthers travel to New York City and Madison Square Garden to face No. 5 Michigan in the NIT Season Tip-Off Semifinal Game on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tipoff is at 9:30 p.m. for a nationally televised audience on ESPN2. Pitt will play in either Kansas State or Delaware in the NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game (2:30 p.m.) or the championship game (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, Nov. 23. Both of those games will be televised nationally on ESPN.
