Series: Pitt and Penn meet for the 14th time in series history with Penn holding a 7-6 advantage. The two schools met last year with Pitt claiming an 82-58 win at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt plays at the Palestra for the 21st time in school history and for the first time since a Jan. 18, 1986 game vs. Villanova. The Panthers are 2-3 vs. Penn at the Palestra. Pitt is 41-19 all-time vs. Ivy League opponents. The contest marks Pitt's third of the four-game Philly HoopGroup Classic.

GAME PREVIEW

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--No. 17 ranked and defending Big East regular season champion Pitt (3-1) plays its third Philly HoopGroup Classic game when it makes its first road trip of the season to Philadelphia, Pa. and the Palestra to play Penn (3-2) on Friday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. ET. The game is part of a Friday  college basketball tripleheader at the Palestra. James Madison and Rider tipoff at 2 p.m., LaSalle and Robert Morris meet at 4:30 p.m. and Pitt and Penn is the day's final contest at 7 p.m.

The contest will be broadcast on Pitt Panthers Television in Pittsburgh and will be produced by Comcast SportsNet. The live telecast will also be available on several other networks including The Comcast Network in Philadelphia, SportsNet New York and Comcast Sports Southeast. Mark Zumoff and Rob Kennedy will handle play-by-play and color commentary duties respectively.

Pitt will play its first game in the historic Palestra since a Jan. 18, 1986 Big East regular season game at Villanova, 74-70 loss. Overall, Pitt has played 20 contests at the Palestra dating back to the 1922 season. It also faced Penn in the arena five times and owns a 6-14 record in the facility (LaSalle 1-0, Penn 2-3, Temple 3-8, Villanova 0-2, Wichita State 0-1). For more information on this, please view the chart on page 10. The "Cathedral of College Basketball," the Palestra is ranked among the nation's top-10 college basketball arenas. Pitt's Nasir Robinson and Malcolm Gilbert both have played games in the building. John Johnson, a Philadelphia native, has also attended games there.

Pitt is coming off a 73-69 victory over LaSalle on Tuesday night. Four Panthers reached double figure scoring including Nasir Robinson (17 points), Ashton Gibbs (14 points), Tray Woodall (12 points) and Dante Taylor (11 points). Pitt blocked nine shots, shot 58.3 percent from 3-point range (7-12), shot 49.1 percent from the floor (26-53) and outrebounded LaSalle 42-24 in registering the win. The nine blocked shots were Pitt's most since it blocked 11 vs. Duquesne on Dec. 1, 2010. Pitt also committed 21 turnovers, its highest output since it tallied 23 at Providence on Jan. 4, 2011. With the win, Jamie Dixon improved to 41-11 in games following a loss. Pitt has now won 108 of its last 110 home games against regular season non-conference opponents and is 87-2 vs. non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt is 42-1 in November non-conference games at the Petersen Events Center.

Penn enters the contest with a 3-2 record. Coached by Jerome Allen, the Quakers have defeated Maryland-Baltimore County (59-45), Rider (78-72 in OT) and Robert Morris (66-60). Penn also played Temple to a 73-67 overtime loss and recently lost to Wagner 71-65. Led by Zack Rosen's 22.8 points per game and 60 percent (18-30) 3-point field goal shooting, Tyler Berardini (13.2 ppg.) and Miles Cartwright (12.0 ppg.), Penn averages only 64.2 points per game.

•Pitt plays its first road game of the 2011-12 season at Penn. Pitt has won 21 of its last 29 road games and finished a school-best 7-2 in Big East road games last year.

•Pitt plays its first game at the Palestra since Jan. 18, 1986. The last time Pitt faced Penn at the Palestra was on Dec. 28, 1964.

•Pitt's roster features three Philadelphia area players including Nasir Robinson (Chester), John Johnson (Life Center Acad.) and Malcolm Gilbert (Acad.of the New Church).
