A hard-nosed guard for Pitt's impenetrable offensive fronts of the early 1980s, PAUL DUNN returned to his alma mater as offensive line coach in 2005 and has made indelible imprints on the Panthers' line play.

Pitt ranked 16th nationally last year in fewest tackles for loss allowed (4.5 per game). That average is even more impressive considering the Panthers featured a true freshman -- Joe Thomas -- at left guard due to early season injuries. Thomas ultimately was lauded as one of the nation's top newcomers and earned Freshman All-America honors from Rivals and Scout.com. Additionally, center Joe Villani was invited to play in the Hula Bowl, Pitt's first participant in that annual all-star game since 1991 (defensive back Steve Israel) and the Panthers' first offensive lineman in the game since the legendary Bill Fralic in 1984.

In 2005, Dunn helped Charles Spencer make a successful transition from guard to tackle and earn All-Big East. Spencer was selected in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.

Dunn, a 1983 Pitt graduate, owns 24 years of experience coaching offensive lines on the collegiate level. Before returning to Pittsburgh, he most recently served at Kentucky (2003-04) and Kansas State (1998-2002).

At Kentucky, Dunn served as run game coordinator and offensive line coach. During the '03 season, Kentucky produced 24 rushing touchdowns, the third-highest total in school history. Dunn keyed the development of first-team All-Southeastern Conference tackle Antonio Hall, who went on to sign with the Indianapolis Colts.

At Kansas State, Dunn's lines provided the foundation for one of college football's most explosive offenses. During his tenure the Wildcats ranked among the nation's top five in scoring four times, including a national-best 48 points per game in 1998. In 2002, Kansas State averaged 44.8 points to rank second in the country.

Serving as the Wildcats' run game coordinator, Dunn oversaw record-breaking rushing campaigns in 2001 and 2002. In '01, Josh Scobey broke the KSU single-season record with 1,263 rushing yards. A year later, Darren Sproles set a new mark with 1,465.

Dunn tutored four KSU players who earned All-America citations, including first-team honoree Nick Leckey and third-team picks Ryan Young, Randall Cummings and Andy Eby. Additionally, Ryan Lilja earned All-Big 12 honors and was a starting guard for the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts last year.

The Wildcats went 50-14 during Dunn's KSU tenure from 1998-2002, compiling four 11-victory seasons and four Top 10 finishes.

Dunn's additional coaching stops include Vanderbilt (1996-97), Cincinnati (1994-95), Maine (1990-93) and Rutgers (1989). His first full-time assignment came at Edinboro (Pa.) University, where he coached from 1986-88. Dunn served graduate assistantships at Pitt (1983) and Penn State (1984-85).

Dunn was a three-year letterman during his collegiate career at Pitt (1978-82). He was a member of four teams that finished in the Top 10, including two that finished second in at least one major poll. The Panthers went 11-1 three consecutive years (1979-81), including the 1980 campaign when Pitt was named the nation's top team by The New York Times at the end of the season.

Dunn earned his bachelor's degree in administration of justice
