Phil Tillman will be an important cog on Pitt's defensive front this year...with the graduation of last year's starting defensive tackles (Vince Crochunis and Dan Stephens), major responsibility will shift to Tillman, who saw reserve duty in 2004...enters fall training camp on the strength of a productive spring..."Phil made improvements and got better throughout spring drills," defensive tackles coach Bob Junko said. "He understands our defense and knows where he needs to be."...in addition to those strides, Tillman boasts a powerful physical frame...dedication to conditioning resulted in him dropping from 340 to 315 pounds...continues the steady stream of Valley Forge products to Pitt...other VFMA products on this year's roster include senior defensive back Bernard "Josh" Lay and freshman defensive lineman Craig Bokor.

2004: Provided spot duty at defensive tackle behind senior starter Vince Crochunis...played in all 12 games and had three tackles...had a season-high two tackles and a sack versus Utah in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Junior College: Product of Valley Forge Military Academy's two-year college...a rare two-way starter for VFMA...exclusively a defensive tackle when the 2003 season began, Tillman moved into an additional starting role at offensive tackle due to injuries...went on to earn 2003 Seaboard Conference Co-Player of the Year honors...a first-team All-Seaboard Conference selection at both offensive and defensive tackle...compiled 72 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries in two seasons at VFMA under Coach Jim Burner.

High School: A standout at Joppatowne High, earning All-Maryland honors...led the Mariners to their first outright Harford County title and a 2A state runner-up finish with a 12-1 mark in 2001...first team Baltimore Sun All-Metro...had 19 quarterback sacks as a senior in '01...played under Joppatowne coach Greg Komondor...also a wrestling and track and field standout in high school...state runner-up in the shot put.

Personal: Phillip Tyrone Tillman, born 3/6/84, is the son of Amelia Crowner...has one brother...brother (James) played football at Frostburg State...social sciences major.
